Diversify for sure. GE is a good pick, so is Ford (one of the few that are not going to tank), just don't put it all in stocks. Maybe talking to a financial planner will help you in the decision making? We only have so much information to go off of, they can help you best. They will take a cut of that $20,000 however.

I would invest in a startup, although you would have to screen them carefully, find the next ebay, paypal, google, etc and you might be sitting on your behind in a pool the rest of your life

I don't know. I think that's pretty risky, especially if you only have 20K to spend. I'd do something more conservative. Perhaps discuss it with your folks and maybe a financial advisor you can trust. Real estate is always good, but for $20k you wouldn't get that much, maybe a fixer-upper.
If you are looking long-term, mutual funds are always good in my opinion.AYKsolutions.com - High Bandwidth Specialists - 10Gbps/20Gbps+ Unmetered & DDOS Protected

A bit surprised, but no one has asked the OP's time horizon / risk profile yet.
The risk threshold that the investment can bear really has to look at the purpose for the investment. How much can you bear to lose right now, and how soon do you need the money? What does the current balance sheet look like now? Is there any unconsolidated debt that exists, i.e. credit card debt, etc.?
If you have a fairly long time horizon with no other debt and no critical need of the cash, you can just throw it into an ETF with a global basket of funds, limiting geographical overexposure to the US market (which, IMO, has a questionable future ATM with spiraling debt and political inability to address important economic issues). Completely hands-off strategy.

Invest in stocks as they are down.

If you have any debts I would recommend paying them off before thinking about investing. Being debt free is more beneficial than anything.
