If it is exim, you can use command

    #exim -bp

With Postfix you can install the 'pfqueue' package.

With Qmail you can use qmail-qstat + qmail-qread.

    OP leaves us all guessing.

    sendmail / postfix: man mailq

if postfix, man postcat, man postsuper

I recommend Postfix or Exim. Sendmail is too basic.

SMTP Daemons in general don't consume a lot of memory. It doesn't really matter which one you use. What *does* consume the memory is high amounts of simultaneous mail deliveries and all the plugins people tie to their SMTP servers. i.e., Spamassassin, ClamAV, etc.
