Bandwidth Shaping

Dear All,

Currently we are using D-link 3026 and 3028 switches (Layer 2 switch) for our bandwidth shaping and mrtg graph.

But it seems unstable, etc sometime it might congest due to unknown reason, even though the particular server is not fully utilize their bandwidth yet.

So we decide to plug in our Linksys SFE2000 (Layer 3 switch) and everything goes smooth once again. But, we never really setup the linksys switch yet.

Can anyone recommend us what kind of switches we should use, is the best choice for bandwidth shaping / QOS for the amount of less than $ 600?

Thank you.

Those low end switches will eventually bite you in the rear for reasons you already mentioned. They have poor buffer allocations which will lead to unexplainable packet loss when you start pushing some real traffic on one or more ports. My only recommendation though experience if you require linespeed or close to it, would be Foundry FESX (424, 448, ect) and Cisco products (such as 3560, 3750, ect).

Get a good Cisco, HP, or Foundry switch. Your business is hosting - why bank on a budget-quality $300 (or even $600) switch running it all?

We normally won't go for low budget switches, we bought the dlink is for testing purpose due to is being recommend by 1 of the hosting company in Malaysia.

But the results turn out was fail.

We are looking forward for another solution. wel,l $ 600 definitely can get a cisco 2 series here. moreover, we does not require a very high end switch which we could not utilize it.

We only require a switch that can do well on QOS and Bandwidth shaping as well as vlan (i assume most of the layer2 switch can do that without any issue). Because we already have cisco asa firewall on top of it.

Thank you.

If you only need 100Mbps ports with 1Gbps uplinks you can get a cisco 2950 for VERY cheap -- heck buy two of them and put one on standby.

Does this switch support VLan and has a web interface?

I need remote access and I'd like to program my own interface for it as possible to make management easier.

Yes, the 2950 series does have VLAN support (64 or 250, depending on the model), and a web interface. The CLI is much better (via serial, telnet, ssh on later IOS), and definitely worthwhile learning.

If you're going to program your own interface, you should use SNMP, which the 2950 definitely supports.

The 2950 can do basic rate-limiting on ingress (inbound to the port).

Thanks everyone for replying the thread.

Information is quiet useful here.

But i missed out something here, due to i set VLAN using firewall (3 x uplinks) we require a VLAN uplinks support switch. Any Idea? or just a switch that can support vlan will do?

3750 are significantly more expensive than the 2950/3550.

How would one go about setting up BGP?
