Love him or hate him, the man was the KING of infomercials. I was rather enjoying his new Pitchmen series. Hated his annoying loud voice, but respected his marketing abilities.

WTH is going on? My thoughts and prayers are with his family. I suspect the bumpy plane landing may have played a role in this, Billy mentioned he hit his head, similar to Nathalie Richardson (RIP) not so long ago. He downplayed it but a slow buildup of pressure in the brain could explain how he felt ok yesterday night leading to his sudden death this morning.

    Head injury?

Mays, 50, was on board a US Airways flight that blew out its front tires as it landed at a Tampa airport on Saturday, MyFOXTampa.com reported.

US Airways spokesman Jim Olson said that none of the 138 passengers and five crew members were injured in the incident, but several passengers reported having bumps and bruises, according to the station.

Authorities have not said whether Mays' death was related to the incident.

The FAA is already deflecting blame for the death of Billy Mays -- claiming the legendary TV pitchman wasn't wearing a seat belt when he took a shot to the head during a rough landing on a flight he was on yesterday.

Here's what we know -- Billy Mays was aboard US Airways Flight 1241 flying from Philadelphia, which landed roughly when the front tire blew out as it touched down. After the flight, Billy told FOX 13 in Tampa that something struck him in the head -- here's Billy's actual quote:

"All of a sudden as we hit you know it was just the hardest hit, all the things from the ceiling started dropping. It hit me on the head, but I got a hard head."

We called the FAA for comment, and a spokesperson told us, "The passenger needs to wear a seat belt during landing and he didn't."

A spokesperson for US Airways did not want to comment until more information comes to light.

WOW, I was just watching that new Pitchmen show as well last night. Like others mentioned he was quite loud, but that's partially what made him great!

Wow, thats pretty weird. I also liked that new Discovery show too...

I think it is, had a look at the seniors account and they both sent messages to each other.

The FAA has retracted it's no seat belt remark.
Laura Brown, the FAA spokesperson who gave TMZ this quote about Billy Mays -- "The passenger needs to wear a seat belt during landing and he didn't" -- now says she didn't say it.

She now tells TMZ, "At this point in time, we cannot have any idea who was or wasn't wearing their seat belt on the plane."
TMZ also has Billy mays last interview at the airport - describing the landing.

Apparently Billy Mays had one, too.

It'll be interesting to see if his sudden death had anything to do with the rough landing at the airport.
If you have to operate your company behind the scenes or under a fake name, maybe it's time to leave the industry and start something fresh.

Yeah, shamwow guy made a move on Billy. Used a high calibre sniper rifle that he got from a Texas gun show illegally.

I don't know how you can like any infomercial guys. They are so damn annoying.

Nonetheless, it is said to see this happen, he was certainly on the up and up. Hopefully this will be the last of the 'famous' (not that you can put Billy into the same category as Michael and Farrah) deaths this year.

I've personally found the ShamWow guy a bit more annoying then Billy's Mighty Putty and Oxi Clean ads. I guess there goes the show Pitchman.

After watching Pitchmen, I actually liked Billy Mays.. he only endorsed what he felt were good products and he seemed like a real interesting guy.

    It's a real bummer.

Both MJ and Mays die within same month, at same age, and same cause?

    http://www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/TV/0...ref=newssearch

Both had the money and access to the best of health care.
So I gotta wonder, if this "world's best" health care couldnt prevent this, why does it cost so much?

I'd grown up over the years with him and his infomercials. He did seem to only endorse products that actually worked. He was obviously very good at his job, and like him or not, most house holds have tried/use a product he has endorsed. Of course he's not on the scale of MJ, however that doesn't make him any less of a human then they was, and will be greatly missed.

Billy Mays was a decent marketer, but he definitely wasn't the best. Go to any sales convention and you see thousands of Billy May's running around all over the place.

He was decent.. but the best... heh.. ehh.. ok.

Really? Funny.... never heard of those thousands of others.

Since his son approved of it on his Twitter account, thought I'd share a comic about it:

    http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/comic.php?d=20090629

The Twitter posts are otherwise a mixture of ups and downs. Gives a sense of what his son is going through.

I did notice today that he was able to sell 6,000 Orange Glo Products in 11 minutes. I think this is some sign of his salesmanship, but an even bigger sign of the power of infomercials.

As far as Sully goes, yes he would be at risk too, but I was thinking of another person who may be doing infomercials with his wife if memory serves. This one does mainly food or juicer products, can't remember the products though, his type of infomercial is more like the Mr. T's where they are always amazed out how good the food turns out even though we know its nothing special.

It may be easier to sell a good product, but not just anyone can sell. Plus, it takes a keen eye to know what is a good product in the first place which is what Billy Mays basically does with the products he promotes. Basically, he knew that if you believe in a product, it is easier to sell it b/c that believability come across and you don't fall into the used car salesman mindset. When you starting seeing the people as suckers is when you get into trouble? Also, the key here is to not sell bad products as this hurts your reputation. Part of the reason people bought from him is they respected his opinion.

This is so true. His voice was a little grating, but it made you pay attention and almost block out what he was saying at some point and actually focus on the product. Obviously, his results speak for themselves.
