Anyone actually know a good PHP / Perl Programmer?

    Hi,

After doing quite a few searches, I thought I would ask your advice.

    1. Do you know of any good PHP programmers who charge a reasonable fee? When I say reasonable, I want a good value, but just as important, a good product.

    2. Has anyone had any success with ELance.com's services? Have you found a good programmer that you can suggest?

    3. It seems like everyone who knows how to install a script calls himself a PHP programmer. How do you get past this as someone looking for a good programmer? Besides asking for references, previous works, and the usual, is there anything else I should be looking for?

    4. How much can a good programmer expected to be paid? Are the prices on elance pretty accurate? Low? High?

Thanks again. Please no PMs as Im still in the initial stages of a concept and am looking for some direction on the programming side of things.

    Two very good PHP scripters:

    Marty: http://scripts.tlcwe.com
    (KBase and Net Status Monitor)

Kunal: http://phpsupportdesk.com (and a mod here)
    (PHP Support Desk)

Both are very good people and show a great deal of passion for their projects. I've used them both on occasion for this and that

    Hrm.

    1. I'll skip this one, since previous posters already suggested some good coders. I'll plug myself though

    2. Nope, haven't used ELance.

    3. The same way you'd hire a regular programmer. Ask them how they would implement a certain site/script, how they plan their work, check their problem solving skills, etc.

    4. No idea w.r.t/ELance; hourly fees can get pretty steep, though. Many coders (myself included) usually charge per-project.

You could ask them questions like:

"How would you go about writing a PHP script compatible with the default install of PHP 4.2.x and upwards?"

They should come back with an answer relating to register_globals being off by default in these PHP installs which will require a little more care when coding. These techniques should be used anyway but if they answer that correctly it will probably suggest that they are aware of whats going on.

Did a lot of work for me and I was impressed with the meticulous nature of the work. 'Chief' doesn't miss the small details

A year later when I look at the code that was created I am amazed at how organized and professional it all is.

Perl is a programming language; I think PHP is just considered scripting.

Anyhow, this should be moved to the Programming Discussion forum.

You can post your project at scriptlance.com and programmers will bid on it. There are some very talented programmers there.
