iPhone MSN Applications?
So with the 3.0 being released it has the updated technology so you can have applications running while they are closed. Know of any chat programs using it so you can stay online while away and still receive messages? Only one I know of is the pay version of IM+ but I dislike the way it looks.

I haven't upgraded to 3.0 yet, but I've been using the Beejive IM app for the longest time and its excellent. You can still signed on with the app closed, and it will send you an email if someone IMs you. If you have Push Email setup, that works great. No doubt they will be making use of the push notifications infrastructure with an update. Beejive IM is hands down the best IM app on the iPhone and iTouch in my opinion.

I will check that one out. I have never used it. I have always used Nimbuzz. Even used it on my old phones.

No, you cannot run applications while they are closed. If the application supports it, and the vendor of the application has a server to compliment/supplement the app, then it may integrate with Apple's push notification service, which allows your phone to receive notifications for any app, while it is closed.
For example, the IM applications like IM+ and Beejive IM all proxy your connections through a server. When you "sign on" to MSN, you're actually signing on via a Beejive/IM+ server:
Your phone <-> [Beejive Server] <-> MSN
This means that when you disconnect your phone or close the application, you can still stay signed onto MSN.
[Beejive Server] <-> MSN
Before 3.0, you'd only get messages sent to you whilst you were disconnected when you start the application up again. With 3.0, Beejive's server will be able to send push notifications to your phone when you receive a message, even when the app is closed:
Your Phone <- [Apple's Push Notification Server] <- [Beejive Server] <-> MSN
And when you open the app again:
Your Phone <-> Beejive Server <-> MSN
Know of any chat programs using it so you can stay online while away and still receive messages? Only one I know of is the pay version of IM+ but I dislike the way it looks.Last edited by Jamie Edwards; 06-20-2009 at 06:39 PM.
