    Background Check

    Hi,

I have been working on a project for a state agency. They have a unique requirement for the hosting. They require to perform the criminal background check themselves on the data center personnel that have physical and remote access to the servers they will rent. Does anyone know if there's a relatively big data center that can comply with this requirement?

Thanks for your information in advance.

hit up the 5 most expensive hosts out there they will be probably the only ones willing to jump thru that hoop to get thier biz unless your talking about a commitment of a few racks of servers.

You have two choices, go big or go small.

Going big may help you because the big DC's might already have had this request before and would be willing.

Going small may also help you because of the limited amount of personnell that may have to be checked. For this you could try joes datacenter or wholesale internet.

    Hi,

It needs to be in US, preferably Texas.

    Thanks for the info.

What kind of commitment are they looking at? You might have an easier time just getting a private rack or cage so that none of the DC staff have access to it?

I'm not that surprised I used to be the network administrator for a school district. If we had people working with the computers even if they were temporary they were required to have a full background check. I'm actually surprised that this is the first time I have heard of this as a request.

How many employees exactly would they be desiring to run such a check against? A decent size data center will have anywhere from ten to hundreds of employees. I would recommend maybe a locking cabinet possibly, and the maybe you can limit the amount of checks performed to a handful.

Shouldn't you just look for a DC which is SOX compliant ?

I think if you talk to the DC they will be more then willing to provided you with such information. And even if they don't then you will know that you don't want to do business with them. Best of luck!

Try going with a larger company as suggested since they usually have this done already. Best of Luck!

    Highly recommended.

Well if its a state run agency then they would definitely do it, but DC's i doubt as this is related to DC and not they employee directly. So complying would be a bit difficult, but those who are willing to do it, would definitely do it.

I think many DCs would be willing to accommodate this request. Ask them.

Yeah providing hosting to state run agency is something which provides a boost to the DC reputation.

Is this a joke? Our government knows anything about security? We have laptops, paper documents and other things walking out of government controlled IT departments on a regular basis never to be seen again.

It will be interesting to hear if you find a place that's willing to do this. I can't see how you could confirm anything since larger companies go through employees and I cannot see how that would ever work.

Perhaps this work is for a foreign government that knows a little more about security

I have worked in various DCs (a couple large ones) as well as work for schools and hospitals on a recurring basis in 3 states. This I've done since '99.

I, and at least two other guys whom I have worked with, all have past criminal records - felony level, non-violent. And these are just the guys I know about since we discussed it at lunch once.

The way people move from one DC to another I would think this would be something very difficult to keep track of, and unlikely to have any real tangible value to the services offered or security thereof.

I dont know from which background you all come, but here in NL its not only demanded by governments but also banks and pharmacy industry that 'certain' employees working and having physical access to servers have their records checked. And there are plenty of large IT companies offering this type of services to their clientele, just not a $99 server lease but starting more close to $3k (for the same hardware).

You got to remember that everything IS possible for a price.

I know a lot of small start-ups that are willing to accommodate that kind of requirement, as long as the pay can cover the expenses.. why not!?
