Hi, Please can anybody recommend a free script like dell's to customize a pc then order. Another example of this can be found here:

Where you can select what size HD etc. I have had a look at the source of the above site and cannot find any sighn of script eg. oscommerce etc.

Seems that is some script actually. As for similar functionality, some of shopping carts have similar feature - some kind of configurator that allows customers to choose components/parts of products from possible range.

Search for ecommerce with configurable products or something similar on internet, i am sure you will be able to find the script you need.

Just by looking at the website it appears to be AJAX based. This is obviously a custom designed and developed application. In such cases people hire a designer and coder. First get the design you desire. Hirer a coder you know has skills ranging from css to MySQL and PHP. The more the coder knows the better and less hassle it will be for you. That site is definitely running osCommerce - the osCid is a tip-off. I don't know what specific configurator add-on it is - but here's the first one google found:

If you google for osCommerce configurator you'll see some others.

I found a module similar to that but cheaper. http://www.itwebexperts.com/custom_computer_builder.php. I noticed http://www.creloaded.com/ in the source also. No idea if that is relevant though.

The solution/module choice really depends on your requirements. If any of the modules above suits your needs, that is perfect, otherwise any solution will need to be customized especially for you.
