Question

Cheap VPS for cPanel DNS Only

Hey all,

I am sure this has been covered before but the WHT Search keeps timing out on me.

Please share some cheap VPS providers that are reliable and have been around for awhile. The specs can be fairly low since I am only looking to use this as a DNS server.

Thanks

I use these from Zipservers

https://hspc01.zipservers.com/hspc/p...category_id=38

They have three locations so you can diversify your nameservers.

lol

I followed that link and grabbed one for $4.95/mo. About 5 mins later, their account system "went down for maintenance" for like half an hour. When it came back up, the price is $7.95/mo!!!

Did you order before the price shot up to $7.95? If so, you should still get the service for $4.95.

I got one with NY NOC that was $5.. I think they're still offering it with a 1 year pre-payment.

Depending on how many zones, you may need a lot of memory and fast disk access. We have seen the daemon named lagging when it is serving over 20,000 zones.

I got 1 at that price. I was going to order more but I guess I was too late!

It was nice to find a decent VPS with the DNSonly pre-installed and ready to go. Still looking for more options of the same.

Yup, found 1 but I'm still looking and trying to determine for myself who has the product I'm looking for.

Have you defined the resource limits and budget yet?

If you're looking for completely redundant DNS, you should really be looking at getting multiple accounts, each in different locations.

For example:

VPS 1 - New York
VPS 2 - Chicago
VPS 3 - Dallas
VPS 4 - Los Angeles

Obviously they dont have to be in these locations.

If you haven't already done so, swing by the VPS offers section to see if you can find some good deals. All I would say, is dont rely on a single provider to provide all of the above accounts.

If you're using them just for DNS, you should be able to get away with fairly low memory, low cost accounts. 128MB RAM would be more than enough, along with a few GB's diskspace and < 10GB Bandwidth.

Good luck with your search!
