need a dedicated server (unmanaged, only hardware support) for live streaming

    Just what the title says

I see the plans of serverloft: I liked them, but they have big delays for new servers ( only have opteron L at the moment).

I need a lot of bandwidth and good connection for the streaming, for red5 server =)

    Thanks!

To save on the flood of folks who will ask -

    - Preference on location of server?
    - Preference on hardware specs?
    - How much bandwidth are you currently using?
    - How many concurrent listeners? What type of stream are you using?

    Related to specs needed:

    - The location doesnt matter. I know USA will have better connection to my users, because the mayority of the listener are from argentina/ latin america.

    - Servers specs, for example, taked from Hetzner:

    Intel® Core™ i7-920 Quadcore
    incl. Hyper-Threading Technology,
    8 GB DDR3 RAM
    2 x 750 GB SATA-II HDD
    1 GBit OnBoard

Bandwidth: 4000 or 5000 gb maybe?

Concurrent listeners: 200+ or maybe 300.

260 U$S. The server specs are high in the last post, but I think a not-that-big server will be ok =)

That is the idea: Start small and grow =)

I think the serverloft Opteron or Xeon L specs are ok for start.

But they are having big delays in delivering the servers, and I wanna to know if there is better options

There may be faster options but I doubt you're going to get such a good price, since the Hetzner prices are already way too cheap. I think you'll be able to settle for a Quad core, non-i7, with less RAM.

You might be best off going with unmetered and choosing a bandwidth cap, because it's harder to calculate metered transfer with streaming. You have to factor in the average time that a listener stays tuned in, or the average number of users for the entire month.

    200 Users @ 128Kbps average = 25Mbps average.

    <Bitrate> * <# of Listeners> / 1024 = <Mbps average>

    128Kbit * 200 / 1024 = 25Mbps
    128Kbit * 300 / 1024 = 37.5Mbps

oh, is video streaming, so, it will be 640 Kbits, no less :$

    640Kbits * 150 /1024 = 62,5 Mbps

    640Kbits * 150 /1024 = 93,75 Mbps

You will want to have a large budget if you plan on pushing 100mb constant

For start, a non dedicated 100 mbits is o.k. But I need something scalable

I'd recommend the ovh EG Max or EG AMD

They have the specs you want and 200 mbps.

Uhm... FDCservers.net are more expensive than OVH. What one is best?

  17. #17
I don't have experience with FDCServers.net however I have used OVH servers for streaming and they worked perfectly, I don't think you would be dissapointed going with them.

Can you give me more details about your server with streaming?

how is the uptime? and the max port speed? =)

oh, and what are you streaming! =D

    Thanks!

Uptime was 100% I think, was streaming radio over shoutcast 20 to 100 listeners at 128kb/s each, the connection seemed to handle it fine.

    Uhmm.. ok =D

100 listeners = 12,8 Mbts + or -. Do you try to download an archive from a fast server to see top speed? =)

If you are going to have concurrent listeners you need to increase your budget, if you want to host your server in US.
