Is there such thing as a good registrar?
I've had my domains with 1and1 a few years now and they've about drove me nuts.
Their servers will NOT propagate changes at all. Their support staff is terrible. I have over 100 domains with them and I'm ready to cough up the 900 or so dollars to move all domains to a company that can do a decent job.
I've been reading the forums and I cant seem to find any good suggestions so I'm starting this thread.
Here's my criteria for the ideal registrar:
1. Good 24 hour support
2. A good control panel that can update dns settings on multiple domains at once
3. Doesnt have a million and one upsells and tons of clutter like godaddy
4. Decent prices -- under $15 a yr per domain when registering 100+ domains
5. A reliable network - changes made in the control panel actually take effect, and do so in a reasonable amount of time.
Any ideas?

Moniker and NameCheap. And sure there are good registrars.
Good luck, and good hunting.

Moniker all the way. Ask for better prices and you'll get them.

Name.com for me. Good service, fast control panel, fast checkout. Good prices, especially when using a coupon.

I'd highly recommend eNom. To get the best pricing from eNom, I'd recommend picking up a reseller account from someone else, such as clientexec, whmcs, or maybe your web hosting provider. eNom doesn't have the clutter of GoDaddy, and their control panel is fast and effective with great support.

Dont buy from cheap registrars
If you are disappointed, it is probably because it was a cheap registrar. Good quality services cost more. Look for registrars offering services at a reasonable price.

I use Godaddy, I have over 50 domains with them, haven't any trouble with them yet. Now way back when you wanted to register a domain name (I'm talking over 10 years ago), Network Solutions was always the one people went to. I know they're more pricey than others, but they always seemed to be the most professional registrar.

I don't understand why you don't like such a company as GoDaddy, it seems to be a good registrar. Ok, you can consider Namecheap as a good alterntive then.

GoDaddy is good but support is way slow. Name.com is good with prices and support too.

I agree about NameCheap
I have to totally agree about NameCheap. They have long been a respected registrar and their prices, services, and interface are all good. I purchased two domain names last night from them. They offer 1 year free WhoIs Guard on all new domains and I also got a free Comodo SSL certificate for each domain name. I also found this coupon code you can use for a discount making the domains $8.81.
The code is INTERFACE.
Hope this helps you.
BTW: After I finally decided on a host, I updated my DNS settings and they were ready to go and pointed at my site in less then 15 minutes. Maybe they're not always that fast, I couldn't say, but that was what it was for me last night. Way faster then 1and1 ever did for me when I used to use them. (By the way, never ever use 1and1 for ANYTHING)Last edited by EmeraldSon; 06-17-2009 at 07:51 AM. Reason: Addition

Echoing what Dave and EmeralSon said, NameCheap is GREAT. Have over 6 domains with them already (... It's a lot for me right now. No current business online) and I managed to transfer one away from GoDaddy's chains.

NetSol were great, back in the day when you had little other choice.
Professional? Now? Sure, if you don't count the whole cyber-squatting thing.
I was/still am using Godaddy, and they were pretty reasonable. The upselling is annoying but you can deal with it and the support is actually pretty good if you pick up the phone and call. The problem is that they're actually a little steep if you don't go hunting for a coupon every renewal, which I got sick of.
Upon the recommendation of someone on this forum, I tried out Moniker, and I've had absolutely no troubles with them at all. I'll probably transfer each of my domains there as they come up for renewal and see how it goes.I used to run the oldest commercial Mumble host.

Thanks for the help.
Here's my findings in case anyone else is curious.
Name.com seems to be the best choice. Great support, great prices, sounds like a great control panel (you can bulk update everything). Free privacy, free dns, subdomain management. I'll be transferring a couple domains, if everything works I'll transfer the other hundred.
Brief recap of most of the others listed in thread:
Moniker - My second choice. Great support, only they don't support sub domain management at all (or that's what the lady on the phone told me). Other than that they seem to be pretty solid.
NameCheap - doesn't even have a phone support line.
Enom - wont even show domain prices unless you sign up, I hate sketchy stuff like that (maybe it was just that I couldn't find the price sheet, if so they've hidden it pretty well and it's still sketchy)
Network Solutions - This is like an overpriced version of godaddy. Talk about overcluttered and and a billion and one up sells. I'd hate to deal with this crap every time I buy a domain.
Oh, and side note. Whatever you do. DONT CHEAP OUT AND GO WITH 1&1. YOU WILL REGRET IT.

Started with 1and1 for my first web site and domain. I got out of there pretty fast, and bounced around a few other hosts that resold domains, not sure what registrars they were actually with I now have about 50 domains, between GoDaddy and DomainDiscount24. Had no problems with GoDaddy, but have read enough horror stories that I decided to move all the important ones to DomainDiscount24. They had some issues with my U.S. credit card at first, but other than that, they've been great.

I would like to say that I hear horror stories about GoDaddy throughout all the time, but have domains with them for a long time and fortunately still no serious problems.

I have used Godaddy before. It is (at least used to be) a complicated system to use/understand. Plus it took a lonk time to have the changes take effect.
I use tucows, I edit the nameserver settings, and usually in 15 minutes the change is noticable. With Godaddy it took over 6 hours. to see anything. I know propagation etc.. But why such a difference?

Dynadot, NameCheap and name.com are pretty good. Not perfect though, Dynadot has some problem with their server sometimes, NameCheap is an enom reseller and name.com used to have some bugs with their interface not sure if everything is OK now. But those are still probably the best 3 even with those small issues.
