    Next big social networking site?

It seems as though ever year there is a new favorite social networking site. Right now it's Twitter, but how long do you think that will last? When do you think the next best network will rise from the rest?

I don't think we are going to see anything major for some time. Twitter is more of a fad, but it's unique. Facebook has essentially won out MySpace and I predict we won't see any big players challenging Twitter or Facebook. The next big social app will be something different and unique.

Facebook hands down. Twitter has a niche but Facebook can copy it quickly by modifying it's wall feature.

Whatever new competitor comes up with, it is important that Facebook provide the new feature asap.

The thing going well for Facebook is the momentum.

There were some large Chinese and German facebook clones, but now Facebook support multi-language, we will see if they start migrating.

What happened to Hi5, Orkut, Friendster?

Friendster espc seems to have lost ground, they were one of the pioneers.

Twitter is for people without "real life" friends

Facebook now looks like its trying to move in on the twitter niche with the new www.facebook.com/username feature.

Friendster has been left behind :p ...

Twitter is good for business, organization or a company to provide their updates to their followers... But they are too formal for casual purposes... I got newsletter from compete that Twitter traffic decreases in May...

Facebook covers everything you need... casual, business, fun, etc..

I dont think there will be any competing Facebook for social networking sites... compared to all that have existed at present... but who knows the future

"Twaddle" will be the next one, I'm thinking. Only 100 characters, but no vowels. IM speak with a Twitter like interface.

Twaddle: Foolish, trivial, or idle talk or chatter.

Or, to cater to the older folks: "Arthritter".

If it were not made up (though the domain has been registered with no content since 1999), I would be happy to. That was more of a dig/parody on the "dumbing down" of the internet in general, with sites like Twitter leading the charge.

Twitter has limited features over Facebook, but you can still make use of the Tweets to post updates for your followers. Sign up for a Facebook account if you want to stay more connected with friends.

Google Wave will be the next fad, there's so many people sipping the Google Cool-Aid that as soon as it's launched people will flock to it with no regard for their personal data.

There's another in progress. It is currently in talk with investors and has a good & unique revenue model. Therefore it is likely to recieve as much as Twitter did, who has no revenue model. The new one is keeping it's revenue model a secret until it has at least 1 mill members about a year after it launches. Right now Twitter has around 50 mill in the bank, it is waiting for a good revenue model to pop up so it can copy. That's why anyone that comes out with a good revenue model has to keep it secret until big enough to bring it to light, or Twitter will blast out with their own copy and crush the new competitor.

Can you imagine that much money? If you provide something people like, and have the hardware/bandwidth to back it up, throw out a few commercials, you could crush Twitter. As seen with friendster, people arent loyal. It's whoever provides what people like. In reality, Twitter's member base is only 40% active, they lose about 60% of their members. I'd bet even within the WHT community, less than 40% still use their Twitter accounts. This is because Twitter basically provides only one thing... 140 character tweets. What really got it popular was 3rd party developers building on the API. For any service to compete, you need a good API developers can use. Them promoting their own developments basically advertise the service itself.

Of course Jamie will come saying nothing can ever compete with Twitter.... like so many previously said about long dead or failing services. Eventually something better comes out. Of course, understandebly Jamie has worked hard to learn and get good with Twitter, he wont want to see something better come out. Obviously, whoever come out to compete with Twitter, it will be hard to catch up (memberbase AND software wise)... no matter how much investment they get. They will have to offer something new and better.

I heard of one investment group that put out $1 mill just to "startup" 15 social networks, and then will fully invest with the strongest one that emerges from that. Social Networking is the new dot com bubble for investors these days.

Still facebook. Twitter is flavour of the monthj, but its a "one trick pony" that can easily be replicated. Facebook is apparently extending its wall functionality, which means the hundreds of millions of FB users dont need twitter.

i'm sure google has something in the works but won't probably catch on... like the google phone. but facebook seems solid to me and will last for years and years to come because of apps. myspace will die and get replaced completely by a facebook app like fuser (or facebook will just buy them). Twitter is just a glitch and basically a facebook app and will die out. did i mention facebook and facebook apps are great?
