    DNS Expert Needed

    Hi Guys,
We have been having an on going DNS problem and have been going round in circles trying to fix it.

We did a server move around 3 - 4 months ago, but one domain is refusing to resolve from the new server. Even after changing the nameservers, and pointing the account on the old server to the new server (changed the A record), the domain resolves to the old site and no matter what I do I can't get rid of the old A record, is it possible that it's cached somewhere?

Here's the results from the problem domain:

    http://private.dnsstuff.com/tools/lo...rver=&detail=0

The IP 72.9.235.221 is from the old server, the IP it should be resolving to can be seen here:

    http://private.dnsstuff.com/tools/lo...rver=&detail=0

We are willing to pay $100 to anyone that can solve the problem, if you think you can help. Can you drop me an email:

dan *a with circle round* d9hosting.co.uk

    Cheers,

    Ok trivial question:
Does the A record on the new server point to the old server?

Seems you managed to fix it as your domain now resolves to 69.73.168.40 and not old IP 72.9.235.221. congrats!

But do tell us what was the issue and how you fixed it

    Not for me.

    Code:
    C:\Documents and Settings\e139046>ping d9hosting.com

Pinging d9hosting.com [72.9.235.221] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 72.9.235.221: bytes=32 time=495ms TTL=44

I checked again, indeed d9hosting.com is pointing to 72.9.235.221

Now I observed interesting thing in traceroutes of both domains(d9hosting.com & d9hosting.co.uk). they are exact same just with one missing node:

    Code:
    63.247.69.178 atl-core-g-g1-6.gnax.net
this node is present in traceroute of d9hosting.co.uk but missing from d9hosting.com. when when this node is present, the server resolves to correct IP.

In other words, Somehow the connection is coming directly from xe0-gnax.cust.atl01.mzima.net to your server, bypassing atl-core-g-g1-6.gnax.net.

I believe this is the culprit. try contacting your DC and ask them to check this node. it should be sorted out

    Hope it helps!

Adding more, its look more like a routing issue with some misconfiguration then a dns issue

    Hi,

Its because you have a glue record for d9hosting.com setup with the .com registry that this is overriding your dns records.

    Were/Are you using dn9hosting.com as a nameserver?

As your domain is registered through enom, if you login to their control panel their should be a section for managing glue records (they might call it something slightly different), either amend it to the correct address or if not using it any more just delete it and your problem will go away.

    Thanks for the replies,
I think we could be onto something with the glue record for d9hosting.com

I've checked in eNom and there is a nameserver setup called d9hosting.com and it does point to the old IP address. I've got no idea why it's been setup but it certainly looks like the culprit.

We can't delete or modify the nameserver via eNom as it keeps coming back with an "Invalid Nameserver" message, but it definatly exists, so we'll get onto eNom and let you know how it all goes.

    Thanks for the help!
