cat /proc/meminfo Cached value too high,


I have bough a dedicated server with 2GB Ram, i have installed Hypervm and so surpise when my server is using most of my memory.

I type cat /proc/meminfo
[root@srv ~]# cat /proc/meminfo

Cached: 1454172 kB

Active: 251024 kB

Is this normal when Cached: 1454172 kB ?

Yes it is normal. From what I remember, cached memory is just memory that has been previously used. If a program that used that cached memory starts, it will use it. Otherwise, if another program needs some RAM and there isn't any free, it will use the cached one.

So you have 1454172kb + 47576kb of free RAM

Almost - it's data that has been previously read from disk that is cached to reduce the frequency of future disk reads whether they come from the same program or not. But it will be released when ram is required by a program.
