    Exclamation Small clustering needed.

I need two servers interconnected .
One is for web , the other is for backend database.

The Backend server is P4-1.8G(slower is OK) , 512 MB RAM , 20GB (or less) IDE HD , no outgoing bandwidth needed , just use eth1 to connect to WEB server.

The web server is P4-1.8Ghz (slower is OK), 1GB RAM (must) ,
    40GB IDE , RedHat 7.3 full install.
Eth1 connect to Backend database server.
    Eth0 connect to Internet .
The bandwidth is about 300GB~400GB/monthly ,
    or 1.0mbps~2.0mbps .

I need the network response time (ping) to Taiwan less than 170ms.
It seems that only Internap has such capabilities.

I hope the price is lower than 700USD/month.

Can somebody give me a quote ?

    Note:
Taiwan main three ISPs you can ping test :
    www.hinet.net
    www.seed.net.tw
    www.edu.tw

You are going to have a hard time with this...
We have Sprint, AT&T, & Worldcom backbones, and we can only get 220ms ping time to those locations.
We are adding Global Crossing next month, and they have a great Asian backbone...but I don't think that will even get down to 170ms.

Well , In fact , we are currently hosting on another provider , its response time to Taiwan is about 150~160ms . The main reason is that they are located in west coast , and use Internap (traceroute result from Taiwan).

But the price is too expensive (over 1K/month) , hense, we're looking for another cheaper company prior to our contract expiration.

Find someone in an Exodus facility; they seem to have optimal oversea routes. Here's a few traces from one of our routers.

Is it possible to host there ?

This doesn't quite count as a cluster though... Just a seperate database server. You got my attention on the word cluster.

    Also - from the traceroutes:

So all you really need to do is get onto someone using alter.net - aka uunet... Then you should be OK.

UUNET fiber was used for 1 of the 3 routes. A company like Exodus which operates multiple data centers consisting of multiple diverse transit providers--you really can't go wrong.

And as shown in the traceroutes the routes to the 3 major networks in Taiwan went over 3 separate sets of fiber out of the US. BGP4 is a wonderful thing.
