What things can you do with a VPS?
Hello.
I recently aquired a VPS from a friend who owns a dedicated server.
I have 25GB of storage and unlimited bandwidth, however for curtesy i told him that i wouldn't go over 50GB/mo. He doesnt seem to mind if i go over though.
I am interested to know exactly what kind of things i am able to do with a VPS beyond just hosting websites.
Thankyou.

You can do basically anything you can do with a dedicated server. It's essentially a full server which means you can run applications such as game servers, etc.

You can run your own applications or resource intensive scripts that a standard shared environment can't handle. However, your VPS consists of not only disk space and bandwidth but also the CPU share it has as well as memory (RAM). These specifications set the limits of what you'll be able to do on your VPS.

You can use it as an FTP server so your friends etc can download files from it. You can create a small game server, VOIP server and more
The possibilities are endless!

One thing you can't technically do with a VPS that you can with a dedicated server is use it as an expensive paper weight.

As far as i know, the resources are shared with the rest of the server. I dont think there is a limitation for me.
The rest of the server is only used for him personally. He doesnt sell VPS or shared accounts to anyone else.
Is it possible to install an operating system on a VPS, and access it from home?
If so, how would i go about doing it?
EDIT: I apologise for my lack of experience with VPS/DEDI hosting.
I have only ever used shared hosting.

If your friend is able to install a decent Ubuntu O/S template onto your VPS, then you can setup VNC and remote desktop into it. That can be quite cool for browsing the internet, and running remote applications, etc.
Just a thought have fun with it.

You can do anything on your VPS.
Install scripts, create websites, you can even play around with it and get used to it.
Good luck with your new VPS.

That made me chuckle.
Basically it's like asking the question, what can you do with your computer? Pretty much anything you want to.

hi JoeBloggs,
VPS is a server... even virtual one it works as a fully isolated environment. this means that you can create any kind of custom configuration you might need. It doesn't matter if it comes to websites or any applications you want to store on a remote server. It is more important what do you need to do on your VPS account?

You can't run Matrix with it.
Note about the IRC and proxies, double-check with your friend that make sure those are not problems.

I had nothing planned to do with the VPS, just had it offered to me, and want to know exactly what i can do with it.
He just told me that he is going to install windows server 2k3 on it, so ill probably use it as a remote desktop, perhaps install uTorrent on it.
