go do a web search on PHP tutorials. There's a ton of free resources out there from videos to step by step how-tos, most of them are fairly good.
Good luck

Alternatively, depending on what you're trying to do download some open source software and play around with it. There's probably 99% chance whatever you're trying to do, there is a free alternative out there.

I learned way back when, by reading a brief overview, and then just doing projects. I looked up information as needs, and got help from irc. Once you start learning, you pretty much learn how to aquire information on what you are trying to do. Google is your friend. Also I have also liked downloading the chm file from php.net, quicks you a quick and easy php manual to use on your desktop. Its great for looking up function syntax.

http://tinyurl.com/cnqcfz is a great resource, like mentioned.
Don't bother purchasing a book on PHP. There's more FREE resources than any book can do for you, using this language.
As mentioned before, the compiled html documentation is great too.

php.net is good if you already have good understanding of the language, but jeez.. not if you're starting out like I suspect the OP is.
tizag.com is quite useful, if not particularly indepth. I tend to google the keywords of the problem I'm having, and bookmark the site that gives me the best answer for the future!

For me php.net is the best.
Also, PHPBuilder and PHPClasses Org if you are a beginner.
