    Choosing between Colo (FDC) & Dedicated (10TB)

    I posted this elsewhere, but I think I will have more feedback from you guys. Basically I am going to be renting game servers, and atleast for starting out I will be going with a server in one or two locations. Currently I am looking at FDCServers (Colocation) for Chicago and 10TB.com (Dedicated) for Texas.

    My main reason for looking at these specifically is game servers tend to fluctuate a lot in bandwidth usage. I could use less than 1mbit 60% of the month and have usage as high as 80mbit at other times. Since I have only built a 1U server, I have not really found anywhere besides FDC that would make it worth it to colocate. (I have heard bad things about them, and seen severe ping spikes on servers hosted with them, but I am hoping renting dedicated bandwidth from them will fix that)

    10TB looks solid, and is probably a much better deal than anywhere I am going to find in Dallas to colocate 1U (95th percentile freaks me out considering I dont want to potentially pay 50$ per mbit for some freak month where I used 80mbit one hour too long).

    So basically what do you guys think? Any past experience with either? I have read some reviews on these forums, the 10TB reviews seem decent, and the FDC reviews not so much. Im not sure if FDC is just a cheap host in general or something, but I dont want to wind up with angry customers due to a bad colocation company.

    FDCservers are advertising their premium bandwidth for game servers with Internap if that makes any difference:

    Unfortunately it's a bit of a hit and miss - you never know until you find out. Obviously a few reviews here and there is good, but end of the day both are reputable companies here on WHT.

    I would highly recommend against coloing a single server.
    You just don't have the spare parts/etc that a dedicated server provider will be able to give you.

    Well in colo, you're providing the server, in Dedicated, it's the host's server and they'll manage the hardware and you the content and OS

    One thing to keep in mind with 10TB is that since they utilize Softlayer's network, you will in fact receive UNMETERED Inbound traffic and 10TB outbound traffic.

    Softlayer does not count incoming traffic against your quota.

    So, if you get hit with a DDoS or the like, then you will not suffer

    FDC won't count it either as all of their plans are unmetered.

    Go with 10tb and don't look back.

    * quality hardware
    * hardware problems are THEIR problem
    * it's month-to-month
    * quality bandwidth
    * lots & lots of bandwidth (free in & 10tb out)
    * did I mention... inbound is free !!!

    Yeah 10TB sounds solid for Dallas. I am still considering FDC as I need Chicago as well, but im iffy. Cant really find any uptime %s or anything.

    FDC colo is great, they help with pretty much everything.
    and their uptime is great also, I get better uptime in FDC then SL recently, can you belive that?
    but i'm not sure they still sell colo space at Chicago. They have new DC opened in Denver.

    I would go with the dedicated, over the colo for a single server. If something fails (ie, a bad ram stick), you could be down until you ship them parts. With the dedicated server, you don't have to worry about the hardware, as that is handled by the provider.
