Gamesever - Windows vs Linux
Hi,
Could someone tell me is there any major difference in what the gameserver OS is Windows or Linux ?
I know with hosting Windows can be less secure, but is there any major difference

Why would Windows be less secure? I think a Linux server without proper protection is more vernable....
Both work just fine, it depends on what control panel you want to use.

I'd go with windows because TCAdmin (server cntrl panel) is most popular among gsp's and also when a popular, highly anticipated game comes out it's going to be for windows of course, you will have to wait a good amount of time before it is compatible with linux.

Linux hands down.
- More efficient
- Caches better.
- Better game play.
- More secure (unless your an idiot)
- Much much much much more stable
- Less ram errors.

Something else which nobody is factored in is that it also depends on what gameserver you are running. i.e. some get better performance on Linux while others fair better on Windows.
I'd personally choose Linux over Windows even if it means I dont get the most popular control panel.

Mind giving arguments for those statements?

Sure, Windows would use SLIGHTLY more resources, but you can tweak Windows to 200MB ram usage...

Oh? Supply some information for this, I'd be interested.

FPS rates? Again, I'd like to know why.

What did you do to your Windows installation to make it crash? I've seen plenty of Windows servers only going down for major updates.

You won't notice this if you use proper hardware. Again, any source for this?
I'm not here to say Windows is 1337. I like Linux, but I'd like to know your sources for these statements.

Linux has too many fanboys. It's just an OS, for pete's sake. It has flaws just like any other. In my experience, Windows is actually more stable. Probably because I know what I'm doing -- of course it was more stable even when I didn't (I've used dedicated for both in the past).

If you're looking to save a few bucks, Linux is cheaper. Windows licensing can be expensive. If you're comfortable with Linux and on a budget, that might be the best route.
People on this forum can argue all day about which is better and you'll probably only leave the thread more confused about which OS to go with. If the server is just for personal use, you might as well go with what you're comfortable with or what makes sense financially.

Every platform is good actually, but Linux is good if your game can run a server in it, if no - forget about it, also it is sometimes easier to manage server in windows, I was running game servers on freebsd, windows and linux and what can I say - windows sometimes was even better.
What kind of game server are you planning to run?

As a game server host who has used both platforms I will always prefer Linux, however I never claim it is "better" then Windows. There are so many differences and benefits of both.
The main thing you should consider is knowledge and fulfillment of your requirements. If you are very knowledgeable with Linux and know it runs the games you are interested in hosting (which I assume you are not or you would not be asking this question) then I would recommend you go with Linux. When Linux is properly manipulated it results in a very good platform for running game servers. The biggest benefit in my opinion is the easiness and fluidity of file management. However you will find Linux to be a bit of a nightmare if you are trying to learn it for the first time.
Things to think about:
Security - An insecure Linux server WILL get hacked. Linux servers are more commonly hacked then Windows servers which is something a lot of admins(especially us linux lovers) don't know. Make sure to have good basic security. Strong root password, maybe consider disabling root login. Change SSH Port, BFD, etc. Also you need to stay up to date on kernel updates since most include
Price - Linux is a no brainer to save some money as already mentioned
Performance - You can tweak performance much more on Linux then Windows by increasing the tickrate and improving time keeping by manipulating the kernel.
Control Panel - A control panel is very handy, and Tcadmin only runs on Windows now, so that's something to consider. I have yet to see a solid panel for Linux.
And as I said and will reiterate the main thing in my opinion to think about is how well you know the OS, you will get yourself crazy trying to learn on the fly. Especially knowing your paying for that server and can't get anything setup.
powergsp's point on highly anticipated games being released only on Windows is also a huge factor

Indeed
I would love to run Linux, but i can't due to that main reason, and also the fact that i have not seen a solid control panel (as stealth stated above) for Linux. TCAdmin had a Linux release, but they stopped supporting it

What control panel are you going to use? What will happen when new games come out? They will obviously be running on a Windows platform.

Can you give us some examples of games where the linux server was released prior to the Windows server?
