NEWS: Softlayer offers Cloud Computing
Softlayer have just launched Cloud computing here:
http://www.softlayer.com/cloudlayer_computing.html
One of the base unit options has this config:
8 Core + 8GB RAM + 100GB SAN Storage
Does this mean there are 2 Quad Core cpus? Anyone know what the CPU is?
It only has 2000GB of bandwidth though. I would have thought it would have 10TB.

Generally most clouds out there nowadays is just pretty much a Xen-based VPS including as the previous posted pointed out, Amazon EC2 etc.
To look at it more simplistically, cloud is simply a dressed up marketing term for VPS running on more than 1 machines.

Again, what makes it a cloud? What Softlayer does is only a VPS based on a VM connected to iSCSI SAN. We are already doing that ... It's a marketing gimmick, I think.
Perhaps we should call our Xen VM a cloud.

If you think it'll get you sales, why not? Customers don't know the difference most of the time.

Cloud may well be a marketing buzzword at present, but rather than looking down on it, think of it as a synonym for "redundancy" and "scalability".

Sure, it's a bit of a marketing gimmick. Although another thing that sets the 'cloud' offerings apart from most VPS providers is per-hour billing, as opposed to per-month.

Very true - the utility aspect.
Have you read the McKinsey Report on cloud hosting/computing?

I thought "cloud" meant provisioning voodoo so you could scale up your cluster quicker than just copying a VM image over by hand and changing some IP addresses.
To me, that little extra bit, is what makes cloud computing. It's almost nothing compared to the virtualization aspect, but it's the secret sauce that allegedly accomplishes the task better than straight virtualization.
But what do I know, I've yet to imagine a task that works better on a cloud that isn't prohibitively expensive to set up.
