Ive been reading up and being informed from various people all over the world, but im slightly confused as to how and what you would actually use this in a real life industry.

IMHO any application you do not need to have remotely or which you access sporadically as well as any multi-user application.

But there are also proponents suggesting to put your entire environment in a [private] cloud and to work with so called thin clients.

It makes sense to host on a Cloud websites, applications or data bases which require a large amount of resources. If you need to receive the thousands of visitors per day or even per hour and you need to make sure that the system behind will handle the load, you need to use any kind of clustered system.
