when will 500 gb hard drive be standard for dedicated hosting?
It seems to me storage space on dedicated hosts has stalled. Why is it that most dedicated hosts are still on 250 GB drives when 500 GB and 1000 GB drives are now standard?

What do you mean by "are standard"? What's the point in increasing the cost of a basic dedicated server by adding larger drives which most customers don't need?

Quite a few companies now offer 500+GB drives. However, many customers don't see a need for such large drives and actually request smaller ones. There are a couple of reasons a smaller drive may be better, such as the time it takes for a fsck to complete, or a filesystem to clone.

Of course you could always partition the 500 GB drive so that a smaller amount is in use. That will give you your quicker fsck and clone but also give the option of additional space at a later point in time.

SCSI and to a lesser extent SAS aren't really around in those sizes. consumer grade SATA drives are. Depends on if you need I/O etc

Great point however this doesn't justify raising the cost of dedicated servers simply to stick in a larger drive as a "standard". If you need to use more then the space provided by what ever your provider gives you, upgrade. Don' force large drives on the ones who do not need them.

I would have to agree with everyone's response above, i would say 80-90% of the time 250 is more than enough. It wouldn't make good business sense to put in 500's and increase prices.

it is standard at many on their new stuff - it woud not be a wise decision for a host to put money into new 250 gig drives at this point.
we switched to them 6 months ago because the cost differential was so small.

The decrease in cost differential is one consideration, but I don't think we've yet reached that plateau of standardization.

We offer a lot of 500GB-750GB hard drives standard.
Interestingly enough, we have quite a few requests for 2x250GB hard drives instead. Some just need 250GB of space and prefer to have a second 250GB drive for backups.

I don;t think that there is a "standard" in term of the size off HDD into dedicated servers. There are different vendors, different requirements and etc.

We have 2x250GB on our servers and this is the usage (it's similar at all servers):
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 222G 57G 155G 27% /home
/dev/sdb1 230G 34G 185G 16% /backup
I don't really think we all need that much of space. We may use it, but we should not forget that will add higher price on the server.

Wasting money on smaller drives is pointless imo. 500GB drives are ~60$. 250's are 40$. Suck it up.

Where are you getting RE3s or ES.2s for 40$?

You probably see that HDD development will be the next big thing in servers with flash drives etc. SATA drives might have a limited life and this might explain the lack of development in producing higher density drives for lower cost.
