I never used MT, but HG was always good when I used them...of course I didn't have high traffic or resource intensive sites.

Never used MediaTemple.net but i have had people tell me hostgator is a decent host. So im going to go with hostgator over MediaTemple since i really never heard of them or heard anyone mention them. Doesnt mean there service is bad though. Just mean's i never used them or heard of them.

I've heard of MT plenty. They're talked about on the forums a fair amount of time.
Your best bet, OP, would be to search the forums for reviews of each.

Both companies are main stream hosts meaning they each have more then 100,000 clients meaning both hosts are very busy each and everyday.
If you want to get personal attention both companies are not recommended, To a main stream company you are just a number and not a person

I think they both are quality web hosts. I haven't used mediatemple but I've heard good things about them. I've been very happy with hostgator and haven't had any downtime or issues.

I dont think each have like 100k clinets, also I guess MT is quite smaller then HG, like 1/5th or more. But Its a guess.

I haven't used HostGator but I was at MediaTemple for a month or so and they were pretty good. The support was helpful and replied to support tickets in a timely manner. MediaTemple's user panel also has many cool features you can play around with. Just be aware that you're venturing into overseller territory.

It really depends on your requirements and budget to decide which host is best for you. If you are looking to get some info in terms of reputation, I'd suggest you to search for their reviews over here and on some of the well reputed review sites over the internet.
Good luck!

Oh ya Hostgator is up to about 500k+ clients
MT is around 100k+ clients
When you do a whois look up you have to note that there reseller clients are not listed under there whois listing because they all use dedicated ips which makes there reseller clients private label.
Thats why both companies are able to charge more then other companies, they are both mainstream

Never used MT, but HG has suited what I use them for (reseller) very well.

Hmm... how do you know this exactly? The number of domains they host or is reported some place is irrelevant, as customers can host multiple domains.
HG claims 20000+ resellers in one ad. Shared hosting customers will likely be more numerous, but will the make up for the difference to 500k?

They charge more because they're mainstream? It doesn't get more mainstream than 1and1 and Godaddy, and as far as I can see, they're among the cheaper providers.
As for the OP's question, I've had a good experience with Hostgator (shared hosting), but didn't use Mediatemple, so I can't make a comparison. Direct comparisons of specific providers make for rather rare finds, unfortunately.
