does your datacenter provide WiFi?

Hey guys, I was wondering whether or not your colocation companies or datacenters provide WiFi for temporary use and whether it's throttled or limited in any way.

If not, what is your preferred method to use to get online at the location, if it's a laptop or a racked computer.

We used to, but we stopped. Now if a customer asks for internet access, I just run a cat5e from a gigabit drop to their laptop so they can work at high speed.

We have an ANCIENT HP rackmount console - I HATE it. But, I'm stuck with it. I do bring my laptop if I need to do something that takes a lot of time, however.

Equinix (atleast NY2 in Secaucus, NJ) does, and it covers the whole building.

We do offer a wireless G mesh, as well as what Dougy offers.

If a customer requires something bandwidth intense during there visit we hook them up to a dedicated gig switch.

Having wifi would add additional security issues in a datacenter and is completly unnecessary.

We offer wifi in our datacenters, but you have to request your way onto it, and it is a fairly restricted network for compliance and security reasons. You are honestly better off leaving a switch port open in your rack or cage for access.

Please note: I no longer work for digital.forest in Seattle, WA, as I left them in early 2010 to pursue an amazing opportunity at an amazing datacenter project elsewhere... I do not speak for digital.forest here. However I still know they provide the best colocation in the Pacific Northwest.

If configured improperly sure.
But sometimes you need some way to test something while being "outside" your network.

Sometimes I need to test remote access issues and I can't be remote if my laptop is connected to my switch. I need to be outside trying to get in.

It's a must. As previously stated, it just simply needs to be setup properly.

He have a wireless router setup in our suite on its own VLAN... I think there are about half a dozen wireless networks in Bluesquare 2. :p

Need to get a wireless 'N' router now though... This one caps out at about 25-35mbit.

That is correct, we do have wifi available to our customers in our Tampa facility.
It has actually been a positive asset for our customers.

Equinix NY2 does only recently. I think it's a great move. While working in data center, I want to be as wires-free as possible.

I think all data center should provide free wireless internet.
