Has Matt Heaton (bluehost) fixed the shared hosting problem forever?!
Matt (owner of bluehost and hostmonster) claims to have finally solved the problem of "how to limit shared hosting users, in real-time, based on their total cpu/memory/io utilization, regardless of application (apache/mysql/whatever).
I'm actually pretty excited about this.
If Matt can do it, then perhaps others will also figure it out and soon we'll all be able to properly manage shared hosting as it should be.
(ie: Currently, limiting users based on disk space/bandwidth is rediculous.. the limiting should be based on the user's desired cpu/memory/io usage levels... which Matt claims will now be possible!
Here's an excerpt/teaser from from Matt's blog:
Quote:
Tracking User Consumed Resources - You can’t “blame” users or even monitor many user activities (Cpu use, or disk i/o usage) on shared servers because tracking user resources means you have to know what user ran what process.
....
MySQL consumes an enormous amount of CPU and Disk I/O resources, but it normally runs as the “mysql” user. This makes it very difficult to track resources used by a particular user. Built in tools such as slow query logs, etc are extremely inaccurate in measuring disk i/o and CPU usage by user. The other major culprit is Apache. Apache runs as a separate user as well
....
We have spent considerable time and money modifying the linux kernel and userspace applications (MySQL, Apache, etc) to report exactly which [actual shared hosting] user is responsible for cpu and i/o usage in real time.
...
We can use this to track and slow down the extremely heavy users in real time so that the server is calm and available for everyone to use.

I'm also interested in learning more. It'd be nice if we could share the information on it.

That's the Heaton way though... Blog about some great breakthrough that will revolutionize hosting (i.e. the mysql breakthrough of 2008), say he will share this with the world, then... on to the next revolution without a word.

Well I'm hoping that they can actually figure this out and implement it.

I have always believed in 'Heaton',, also just hoping he would share the kernel modification with all (in true open community spirit),,, anyways I have always loved and used Hostmonster.

Sounds great! Certainly hope that Matt will share this with the community which will benefit both the service providers and the end-users.
Cheers!

He also said

* "Well, after we clean up the kernel code a bit and make sure it is 100% rock solid I will post the patch free of charge here on my site." on Jan 20 2009 in his "The pain of backups, the sweetness of speed!" post
Has anyone seen any of his promised code released ?

Yes, I remember that, I guess as there is no time frame mentioned for the same, it is still to early to lose hope and start commenting like this.

I am sure when Hell freezes over Matt Heaton will jump right on his promise of making his findings available to the " community."
Just as JohnCrowley has already stated it is "the Heaton way" to do a lot of blowhard, bragging with no intentions of ever following through with any action.

Remember, this is the same guy who couldn't figure out how to run r1soft according to directions and within the clearly-stated framework of the software... he blamed his own ineptitude on r1soft, and then turned around and decided to not run backups at all on a number of their shared servers.
Do you suppose that the thousands of clients packed on those servers have any inkling -- let alone fully grasp the consequences -- that their data isn't being backed up?? Golly, I sure hope their hard drives don't crash...
In other words, I'll believe it when I see it.
Just my 2¢ worth.
