Do IRC applets (or whatever you call it) slow down the server?

Not sure if this is the right place to post, but do IRC applets (like JPilot) slow down the server? A lot of people tell me it'll slow down the website. Is that true?
If not, any other applets/scripts/programs to recommend?

Do those people also tell you why?
It will NOT slowdown your server because the only thing that happens is the applet being downloaded.

Ok, if many many people are connecting at the same time downloading the applet but it is client side and the applet makes the connection to the irc server.

    Clear?

how so? Once a java applet is downloaded it's a client-side application - meaning all the work is done on the user's computer through their browser.
