it's gotta suck to have to run around to find the stragglers, granted most of them are clearly visible and screaming for their ip's, i wonder how they'd do it though (walk around looking for switch ports that aren't blinking?). I wonder how many boxes are left

One would think they'd have all their customer records up to date and at hand. Apparently that's unforunately NOT the case, therefore the customers continue to suffer.

So now it's been a full week, eh? Talk about unacceptable...

Well if they documented their network properly it wouldn't be that bad...

There is software for keeping track of IPs and who has'em..

I beleive hotscripts has a few.. But again, this is all if they did proper documenation

Oh i know, ip tracking isn't at all hard. We have a custom database for doing this that i wrote last year, but it's really nothing even that fancy, ipaddr, device, device#2, description, bindings [cpanel license, etc.], group, notes.

Nothing one couldn't mimic exactly in excel for that matter .

If they had proper documentation there would be no "stragglers".

With proper documentation it's a 1-to-1 swap of old for new IP. Can be accomplished in perhaps two or three minutes per machine.

I had to laugh at the idea of techs running around the DC looking for boxes that aren't on the network and trying to figure out what was assigned and what wasn't.

Heck, if they had only two techs and simply kept the IP addresses in an Excel spreadsheet with a column that identified the physical server it was assigned to they could have renumbered every box in the plant in less than 24 hours.

That said, I wish them (and especially their customers) luck.

Whats gonna be even more fun is when they get another complaint in, and they start unplugging boxes thinking that IP is there

We could start taking bets on how many tries it takes to find the right box

Hahaha, i've done that ONCE, and man (assigned the wrong reboot port to someone, they were only booting a idle server) but it was hilarious to have a tech there and the general "WTF does that other server keep beeping for?!" question over the phone while the frustrated user kept clicking "immediate reboot" tons of fun when you look back at it, not too fun at the time.

Nocsol, for anyone whose NOT up, it's been more then 4 days, im sure they care that fdc's network is up when their own servers are not

Curiously, for those who aren't back up yet... did you prepay for X amount of months of service, or do you pay monthly?

It's logical though, you must admit that. Get customers who pay monthly and/or have a large amount of servers up first. I am nothing but a mere 1 server, prepaid, petty customer, right?

Soon to be ex-customer. I've been jaded by the network reliability there, i've dealt with it, I know i'm still getting a good deal for what I pay. I certainly don't put anything critical on the server there, and i pity those who did/do. However, a week of downtime is something entirely different, and to watch others who have the, how shall i say it, pleasure of griping about getting more ips whilst a large(?) portion of the 20% left are still waiting to even get back up. That says something. FDCServers have shown their priorities clearly. I am NOT going to email them again, I think one email is enough. I will wait for them to get back to me, because, believe it or not, I pay for that, as little as it may be.

And before all of you jump in and say "you pay for what you get", I am very aware of this, I paid for a box on a network with extremely high packet loss, truely random latency, abrupt reboots to my box without requesting it (nor having it acknowledged), and so on. However, these past 7 days I have missed all the packetloss, latency issues, etc... and i'm NOT getting what I pay for.

I'm not really angry, it was their choice to not answer my email. It will also be my choice to leave. That's what is great, we all have a variety of choices, it's just a matter of picking one over the other.

    cheers

the fdc experience might be compared to hosting on a cable modem where the cap is pretty high. You get the tech quality (so i've heard), occasional ip problems/shifts, random latency spikes, and random packet loss/speed increase/decrease , theres a good comparison , and im sure hosting off someones cable would be ubercheap too .
