VPS

In the past it was a no no to run game servers on a VPS. Has this changed with the new generation of hardware and super spec VPS's? I was pondering running a couple of personal game servers on one.

I know a few people who run game servers on VPS's. Seems to work quite fine! CPGS is quite good also

Do you happen to know the VPS specs, game types, and number of servers they are running?

It all depends on what the VPS has...
Recomanded Requirements
1GB RAM
100GB HDD
1000GB BW
100 or 1000mbit connection
Linux OS
Game CP (i.e. TCAdmin)

I DO NOT RECOMANDED ANYTHING LOWER; people don't like recieving lag! And this will guarantee that they wont recieve lag. But it all depends on the game and how many you are hosting.

Hi Redux,

I only plan on running personal game servers, thus I will not be selling any and a game CP will not be needed. The VPS plan I'm looking at has 1GB RAM and 900GB of bandwidth. It's the equal usage of cpu that I'm concerned about.

TCAdmin won't work with a Linux operating system as they don't offer support for it anymore

Another alternative to TCAdmin that can run on a Linux platform is something like Swift panel. (https://www.swiftpanel.com)

Good luck to you and running your game servers!

Most game servers don't need 100GB HDD space and not even near 1TB of bandwidth. I ran a game server with over 400 online all day 24/7 and a forum. I only pushed 600GB BW.

A good network mesh with Internap is really nice also.

Thanks iWF-Jacob and Your1Hoster for your responses. You other guys really need to read all of the original post before responding. A control panel discussion doesn't help me out much.

There are still a lot of providers who dont allow it in their T&C's, but generally you will get away with it nowerdays.

By decent i.e. not someone running 30 or so VPS on a single disk/RAID-1 setup as the I/O is going to be all over the place.

Weve got a few customers running CSS servers and theyve been with us a while so it must be ok

We've also got a few customers running CSS servers on their VPS's, and all seems very well for them.

As was mentioned, if the specs of the VPS are up to par with your needs, and the server is loaded down with other users; you'll be fine.
