    WebCam hosting questions....

What would it take to host maybe ~15-25 webcams? I assume I would need another dedicated server.... As they intend on that number to grow.

The customer at this point is not sold on a particular format, so that is open at this point.

What is the most efficient reliable format to use? and what would be required on the server end of the deal?

Streaming that amount of cams... anybody care to project bandwidth consumption? A rough guess would do.

So, as I frantically research this... any tips from you folks would be great.

    Thanks

    Edit: Update.

Ok, so I will start out with an additional server just for the streaming. That is the easy part.

I am fuzzy on the actual software to receive the stream from the Camera and turn it around and serve it to visitors. One option I saw was this: Helix Universal server. http://www.realnetworks.com/products/server/index.html

Will this product fit this application on a RedHat server? Or is there a better option?

    Thanks in advance

    Anybody? Pretty please?

I have a call into Real Networks, and am awaiting a call back. Other than that, most of the info I find googleing is related to porn (this project is in no way related to porn!).... there is some good information......... but not quiet what I am looking for.

So, has anybody had experience with a project like this? The server software from Real is a chunk of change, and want to make sure I am on the right track.

    Thanks in advance!

What are the cameras going to show, how big would the size be?

The cameras are going to be installed in business locations throughout the customers county. They are handling the local aspects... camera placement etc... And are talking about DSL or cable at each location to feed the streams to the server.

I am unclear as to what he wants the size to be yet. I am not sure he knows either.
This is just something he wants to do, and is unaware of most of the technical aspects... as am I . LOL It does have the potential to be a large project and grow over time though.

So my end of the project is providing the server and software to make it happen.

What exactly are they trying to do? What is their goal? Who is going to view the cams? How many people? 10? 100? 1000? 10K? 100K? What kind of budget do they have?

You need to know that kind of info before you can decide on which streaming technology to use and how much bandwidth will be needed.

Yeah, I know... That is what sucks... he really has no idea about anticipated traffic.

The project will start in one county. It will be a Membership/Pay type thing. People that want to view these cam feeds will have to pay. From what I can tell, it will start out fairly slow. Without a bunch of data, and an unproven market, about the best I can tell him is we can start out with one server, and go from there. He understands this.

In talking to my contact, the person has money to do this... so withing reason that should not be a problem.

He does want the format to be one that most people can view, though he does not want to use Windows Media.... so that narrows it down some.

So, just for an exapmple (read: guess), if he has 12 cams initially, and say 100 people subscribe, would that seem reasonable on one server? The bandwidth will be Tier 1, and we will start out with 150gig per month... and him paying for overage, or starting up more servers as needed does not seem to be a problem for him.

So.... mostly at this point all I can do is guess.

What kind of business is he running? Why would anyone want to pay/subscribe to his webcams? Are we talking about a webcam in a store or something like that?

Even if he doesn't want to use Windows media you should check out the site. You'll get a lot of good info there.
