Offering a geocities/tripod style free web space service...how do I do it???

Does anyone have any experience of using a Rackshack server to host a Geocities/Tripod type of free web hosting service?

I've seen a couple of packages like:

    http://www.webumake.com/wweb/

    and

    http://dvhs.com.md/

so would welcome some feedback on how best to approach this.

Is this something to run on an Ensim server, or even say a Raq 4?

I want to offer users 10meg of free space in the form on www.theirname.myname.com or www.myname.com/theirname and also allow them to FTP up their files as well as being able to use a WYSIWYG web interface to update their pages.

Likely to offer this service to around 2,000 accounts in a very nice focused field.

    thanks

How would you make money or support yourself?

I'd say you'd need to have advertisements on their sites...

    Just my input

Your question shouldn't be how to do it but why. Advertising for the big boys has dried up let alone for small startups. Also all the issues found in paid hosting are magnified, you have a lot more spammers, warez and porn sites to worry about as thy do not need a cc to sign up

Unless you have some new, great angle don't do it

You wouldn't come near to breaking even with the amount of bandwidth you'd use! And 2000 sites on one server is way too many!!!

thanks for the input. the free web hosting will be offered by my jewish.net site and also forms part of my other Jewish web site network. the free hosting would only apply to Jewish groups and organisations, so everyone would be checked first.

By doing this we hope to cut down on abusers.

So any ideas on how best to do this?

http://dvhs.com.md/ is very good software and DVHS programmer (Lilian from Moldova) is very nice and will help you to install the software, but i think you will need a dedicated server for DVHS so you can use mail features, i failed to run the email on Exim ( i use CPanel ) while the rest of software worked fine.

I just wanted to comment that both WebUMake Mail and WebUMake Web (and the SubWeb add-on, though this does require a dedicated server) will work on Ensim and Cobalt RaQ servers. I've personally installed it on 2 Ensim boxes in the last week, and the products themselves have been developed on a Cobalt RaQ4.

Do note that neither of our products interface with the actual Ensim or Cobalt UI's - they're self-contained.

Wrt the number of users. We do have the product running with customers with 10's of thousands of users on dedicated servers without significant issue, other than what has already been mentioned, i.e. bandwidth. There are Apache mods that you can incorporate to limit this on a per VirtualHost domain if you want to restrict bandwidth use:

I know of a free one that works with windows

Check the microsoft.com site for a tool called "shs"

This is a geocitys type hosting setup that allows you to host 1k+ sites on 1 IIS server.

It also has a web admin to allow you or your users to upload files.

    Hey,
Contact me. I was very close to starting my own "Geocities/Tripod" site but I decided it wasn't worth it. Catch me on AIM: msiacl or ICQ: 163075727 and I'll try to help you out.

    Try http://www.cyberscript.net/products/easyhost/

They seems good and there free version off the software is not that bad to begin and later you can upgrade

There is a good demo off the software on the site...

and there is a compare graph. from the payd and the free version... That way you can see the features

    http://www.cyberscript.net/products/...son_chart.html

I wold recomendo you to get a dedicated link for that, that way you wold not pay too much for bandwight
