Thread: Servers

    Servers

    Whats the difference between these:
    Co-Location (colo?)
    Managed
    Dedicated
    ????

Which is the best for a host? Or should a host look directly at a datacenter?
Where are the best servers, or your servers located?

Colo - You buy a server and place it in the DC

Managed - You pay a monthly fee to the dc/host and they look after the box, security updates etc

Dedicated - You rent a box you need to apply patches etc.

Cololaction means you provide your own server and send it to a data center, wheren they plug it in for you, give you some IP addresses and some bandwidth. The actual server is yours.

Managed is a dedicated server that you lease/hire and the people you lease it from manage it for you, they take care of it, update the software etc.

Dedicated is just a dedicated server. Comes in unmanaged or managed. Unmanged means you do everything yourself, managed - read above
