    Powerful Attack Cripples Servers

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...2002Oct23.html

    Very interesting....

I was having outage problems last night with many of my web sites. I could not access my own web sites and some of my customers couldn't access their site; however, several people were able to reach my sites and others run on the same server. I doubt this is the cause to the downtime I had yesterday, but it very well could be.

Did anyone else have any downtime yesterday evening? Anybody think this event could have anything to do it? Any comments to add on this?

13 root servers? *chill* I HATE that number. Just think, Friday the 13th 13 of 13 root servers fail because of a large DoS attack.

Man i cant beleive ppl dont acually get in and know this will happen. TO plan an attack on such a large scale you need many of these guys to do this. Someone should have raded it out at some time.

Well I suspect that those 13 may become a few more after this. Nice to know the internet is made of sterner stuff though. With caching it was almost nothing more than a bump in the road

My ISP is so bad at the moment, I probably wouldn'y notice if the 13 root servers materialised wings and spent the week touring Florida.

I think they have to take down all but 4 of them before we would see any performance problems.

Well, 9/13 servers were taken down. That leaves 4.

I think they got it wrong (I could be wrong too), all the articles I read said that only 4 we completely unreachable.

This is 2 days old already, don't any of you guys get your Matrix NetSystems reports? you could have seen this happening while it was going on ( plus read the follow up ). Slashdot also reported this issue.

But as a note to some of the posters. the attack was a simple attack, basically just one heck of a huge flood. the scary thing in my perspective is that this basic style attack could have been done by 3 people or less ( read the attack on GRC.COM to understand how )

What's worst that again not only was this a flood, but it was a simple style flood. a good filtering system might have helped, but as this case is being reported, the attack was at such a scale that the only way to compare it would be.

basic flood attack = rain storm, river rises slightly
good flood attack = thunder storm, river rises banks overflow minor damage.
the attack above = North Easter storm, river rises, dam burst, banks flow, and the area get's flooded.
the better attack from above = did you ever read the story about Noah's ark.

the parties involved could have done the attack covering other aspects of flooding and would have been able to really take the systems down solid.

based on what's being said I think they said it was a basic UDP flood attack
