tools for diagnosing a DOS attack

    Dear webhostingtalk,

Could someone post methods or tools you use to diagnose DOS attacks, such as sources, types of attack, etc?

we have been trying almost everything to block attacks including strong IP table rules, portsentry, snort, turning off ping's etc.

    What other methods are available?

download iplog. goto www.freshmeat.net type in iplog and grab iplog

after installing do iplog --help and use the switches there to run it

then tail the log and it should show you whats going on.

I find that the best tool is an experienced, full time system administrator.
