erhm.. some basic questions about dns and nameservers
Uptill now I always had the situation where the company that hosted my site also arranged everything about the domain names from those sites, so I dont have any real experience about how it all works. But now I'm in the process of getting a dedicated server, and I want to use some domain names I already registered somewhere else , some time ago. Those domains are working and are using the nameservers of the registrar, but so far they are pointing to the site of the registrar itself because my sites are not online yet.
Now, the provider of my dedicated server is asking me some questions... like: what nameservers do I want to use, and is this dedicated server of mine going to be used as nameserver itself or not ?
I guess the choice is between the nameservers of the registrar, and those of the serverprovider. But wich solution is the best ? Why should I want to choose the one or the other ? And do I want my server to work as a nameserver too ? Is that usefull for me, or just extra hassle ?
My objectives are simple : get those domains pointing to those sites I will host on that server. Whats the best procedure for that ?

If this is your objective, then chances are, just using your registrar's nameservers would be the easiest for you. If I'm not mistaken, your registrar might be enom, and your server might be through fastservers (just guesses, doesn't really matter). I have never set up a server with cpanel to run DNS on the machine, however I'm guessing it isn't terribly difficult. The one difference I can see is that your registrar most likely has a better DNS setup than just you using the one machine.
Some of this is in theory, as if you are using one server to serve sites, then most likely, it isn't going to matter if that same server is your DNS server as well (if the server goes down, it won't much matter due to everything being on that one server IMHO).
Which do you feel more comfortable with? Do you have 2 IPs to set up nameservers? Do you know how to set up nameservers on the server?
Really, in the end it isn't gonna make much difference is what I'm trying to say. What's best for you is what matters most.
