    Sendmail Vs Qmail

    Important question,

Ive heard Qmail is more secure (no doubt), and it allows for virtual pop accounts. I was seriously considering using it, however I came accross a post that said that you cant depend on qmail for mass mail or important 24/7 email services and that sendmail is better for that type of operation.

So, can qmail be used for critical email services? is it reliable?

    Thanks.

I'd be interested in seeing where you read that. I know of some very large ISP's that run qmail with no issues.

qmail is superb, the person thats giving you this information is probably confused.

The problem with sending out mass mailings is that you hold the chance of getting added to the RBL (Realtime Black Hole List) which is a spam database and can cause HUGE mail delivery problems if you are added (www.mailabuse.org)

I have setup systems in the past with q-mail and ezmlm (Easy Mailing List Manager) that has sent out over a million messages.

Hope this helps with your decision.

6+ years running an ISP and doing mail for a couple hosting companies, businesses and schools - Qmail hands down.

Qmail, Vpopmail. Ezmlm, Qmailadmin or Vqmail, Sqwebmail or IMP, Spamassassin and rblsmtpd and never worry again.

big, small, converting, whatever, it's all good.

Qmail is more simple which makes it secure and it was programmed with security in mind.

However, sendmail can be made just as secure although it does take some time.

qmail is awsome when used with vpopmail for virtual mail accounts .. means ya dont have to add system users for loads of mailboxes

I saw that post too. And I was like, "what the?" I held my tongue, though. Perhaps I shouldn't have, because people sometimes believe what they read here if no one refutes it.

Qmail is much much better, more robust email solution than sendmail, in my opinion.

    Qmail rocks

As a relative newbie to the dedicated hosting world, I spent several hours learning the basics of sendmail. Once I got it "kind of" figured out, and mail was moving successfully, I realized that virtual domains and imap/pop access would require yet another significant investment in time.

Fortunately, several people on this forum steered me toward qmail + vpopmail + courier imap. Half a day later, I was up and running and couldn't be happier.

    Short answer.... Qmail. Hands down.
