Red Hat Linux 8 Web Hosting Set Up

Hello, I'm new here. This board is pretty cool.

Anyway, how do you actually set up web hosting on Red Hat Linux 8.0? I am thinking about setting my own web hosting business. If you can give me an online tutorial, that would be nice. I'm kind of new to Linux, but I still want to learn.

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

I would recommend that you first learn how to use Linux before starting your own webhosting company.

But basically, you need to setup an services such as the following

httpd - used for displaying web content.
ftpd - used for file transfers
sshd - used to remotely control your server in a pretty secure fashion

You will probably want to install the mysqld which provides mysql databases but it's not necessary.

    Check out the links below
    www.apache.org for an httpd server
    www.proftpd.org for an ftpd server.
www.openssh.org for an sshd server and ssh client.

The above are only for a basic basic basic server.

You could get away without sshd if you had physical access.

You should find a control panel that your are confortable with most do it everthing for you and the minor changes and tweaks you can learn as you go along.

    I personly like cpanel.net

You can find a reseller by typing cpanel reseller in the search here.

    Good luck,

I'd stick with looking at RedHat 7.3 or even RedHat 6.2 if I was you. RedHat 8.0 is brand new so exploits and holes aren't very well known yet.

The rule of thumb is to never install a .0 release of anything. .1 and above will have patched the gaps.

    RE: RH8

I haven't confirmed it yet (Sad, considering CDW delivered my RH8 Pro box the other day).. but someone said 8 has Apache v2 in it?

Anybody started playing with it in a production enviroment yet?

I'm going to round up a test machine in the next week or two and start playing.

But honestly, for now, I'd stick with a 7.x release for anything production...
