I figure withen a month or so, they'll have a 3.5 ghz processor and come out with some needed update that requires a 3.5 ghz processor.. Oh well They'll figure out something to make me buy a 3rd PC for the year

It's the Wintel cycle. Stop this madness, now, and get an OS other than Windows. Just kidding. But yeah, Linux still runs good whether on a 450mhz machine or a 3.5ghz one.

Yeah, I run FreeBSD on my 500mhz machine with 128mb of ram, and it runs better then my old 1.4 ghz machine.. I dont see a point of putting FreeBSD/Linux on a 2.66 ghz processor

True, but it's mostly the gamers lament. Winows runs just fine on a sub 800mhz computer, but the moment you want to play a brand new game then you hardware starts to shows it's age. Oddly most games still 'recommend' a 700mhz or better CPU, when I think we all know that double that is a good starting point

One wouldn't be Photoshop would it? That's a hungry piece of software, that's for sure. Hmm, 3D renderers have an appetite too

I have yet to find a time when gaming where my computer is outdated.

    A long time ago I had a 166mhz P1. I upgraded to a 650mhz Athlon. Not much of a difference (gaming-wise). A couple weeks later i upgraded from a 4mb video card to a 32mb 3d card. Huge difference.

I still have my 650 and it runs most games great, but some look a little choppy so i just got a new video card (128mb ddr). That should help out a little, maybe my computer will last me til the end of next summer! I've had this thing since the end of 1999 (i think) with the same HDD, CPU, MB, Sound, but loads of new ram.

The longer I can hold off buying a new comptuier, the better (I want my next pc to be powered by a clawhammer)
