what happens when one site is hosted by two different companies?
I have a website that has been hosted by Aracnet for several years. Recently I switched the hosting of my website to some upstart company. However, I didn't fully trust that the girl who was running this company was honest. I never stopped the hosting of my site through Aracnet.
So, my site is (supposedly) being hosted by two companies. However, if I delete the title page of my site from the Aracnet account, I am unable to access my site from the web. Does this mean that the other hosting company isn't hosting my site? Shouldn't I still be able to access my site on the web from this other company?
Well, everything is basically controlled by the DNS server entries at your domain name registrar. You could have all your files hosted on both server but only one can be accessed at any time.
However, it might be a good idea to maintain both at the same time for a period of a week to a month when you do the DNS server change over, with both up, there would be the minimum of down time for the transition to be completed.
Actually if you cannot trust the new web host, perhaps it is better not to initiate the move at all. I always feel that the website is something very important to me and I wouldn't trust it to anyone who I have an ounce of doubt about.
Somehow I sense that you are actually happy with your current host and if it is to save a few bucks with the new one, it might not be worth the while.
I think you may have a copy of your site at that girl's server, but you are not accessing it at all. It is only good as a backup (which you can do from your own computer). The world isn't seeing it. When they type in the name of your site, it accesses aracnet.com's server because that is where your domain name is pointing to.
Why would you leave a good host for an upstart that you don't trust?
