    i got a dns problem

hey what is wrong with my dns

i THINK my domain thedigitaldream.co.uk points to my server, but i dont think mail and a few other things work

can you check this out for me, here is my thedigitaldream.hosts file :

    Code:
    $ttl 38400
    thedigitaldream.co.uk.	IN	SOA	digiserv. admin.thedigitaldream.co.uk. (
    			1033508717
    			10800
    			3600
    			604800
    			38400 )
    thedigitaldream.co.uk.	IN	NS	digiserv.
    thedigitaldream.co.uk.	IN	A	81.97.225.82
    www.thedigitaldream.co.uk.	IN	A	81.97.225.82
    mail.thedigitaldream.co.uk.	IN	A	81.97.225.82
    srv1.thedigitaldream.co.uk.	IN	NS	81.97.225.82
    srv1.thedigitaldream.co.uk.	IN	NS	thedigitaldream.co.uk
    mail.thedigitaldream.co.uk.	IN	MX	1 thedigitaldream.co.uk
can you see any visible mistakes there?

    thanx, Matt

    Hi Matt

Your MX record is reversed. It should be:

    thedigitaldream.co.uk IN MX mail.thedigitaldream.co.uk

You are also going to have a hard time trying to ftp to your site - you have no DNS "A" record.

You have the domain record and a 'www' record.
    Where do you see ftp?

ahhh right i know what you mean now

at the moment i dont need ftp as have access to the server directly

i am still haveing problems though, it just appears that my dns completly doesn't work!

what i have done it this

i have just one server, and one ip address, because im poor lol

well my registrar requires two name servers and ip addresses

so what i did was put my server as the first one, and then signed up for a dns management company and put that in as the second

so if you look at my domain records by searching whois.co.uk you will notice my name servers are as follows :

    SRV1.THEDIGITALDREAM.CO.UK 81.97.225.82
    NS1.EVERYDNS.NET xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

could this be messing it up?

Unless your "SRV1.THEDIGITALDREAM.CO.UK" is registered as a name server it's useless. Your outside DNS management company should give you 2 nameservers to use.

    Then your entries should be:

    thedigitaldream.co.uk IN NS ns1.managementnameserver.com
    thedigitaldream.co.uk IN NS ns2.managementnameserver.com

yer i have registered it as a name server

but my registrar needs me to supply at least 2 name servers.

    well i only had one

so i gave my registrar this info:

    SRV1.THEDIGITALDREAM.CO.UK 81.97.225.82
    NS1.DOMAINMANAGEMENTCOMPANY.NET xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

the only reason i used a domain management company for the secound record is because my registrar needs two or more name servers. i only have one, so i HAD to supply something for the second entry.

but my registrar does have the above info

so will this cause a problem.

if i had two ips then i could put
    srv1.thedigitaldream.co.uk 81.97.225.82
    srv2.thedigitaldream.co.uk xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

but since i only have one ip address i cant do it that way, its crap

so do you think giving a false secound name server to my registrar would it screw it up??

    thanx

How long ago did you register the nameserver - not the domain.
    Registering the nameserver is different.

but my isp is pointing to the new records. i know that

i personally think that maybe the secound name server is screwing it up

but i dunno. I would get 2 ips, but im 17, and its hard to get work round here, so i cant afford it

Give it another day or so.
It can take a couple of days for the new DNS information to propagate throughout the root DNS servers. Any DNS changes take about 48 hours.

    ok thanx.

    just one thing though

if you change something on YOUR dns server, you dont have to wait for the changed do you?? its only when u change the name server entries for the domain with your registrar?

and thanx again for all your help

    im so greatful

    thanx

ok is the hostname of the machine meant to be the same as your SOA entry?

and also, is your SOA entry meant to be the first entry that you give to your registrar?

here is my new thedigitaldream.co.uk.hosts file:

    Code:
    $ttl 38400
    thedigitaldream.co.uk.	IN	SOA	srv1.thedigitaldream.co.uk. admin.thedigitaldream.co.uk. (
    			1033747884
    			10800
    			3600
    			604800
    			38400 )
    thedigitaldream.co.uk.	IN	NS	srv1
    srv1.	IN	NS	81.97.225.82
    www.thedigitaldream.co.uk.	IN	A	81.97.225.82
    thedigitaldream.co.uk.	IN	A	81.97.225.82
    mail.thedigitaldream.co.uk.	IN	A	81.97.225.82
    ftp.thedigitaldream.co.uk.	IN	A	81.97.225.82
    thedigitaldream.co.uk.	IN	MX	0 mail
srv1 is the hostname of my server
