Decided to purchase a domain name

I need .com for my website.. I finally realized that purchasing .com really helps you takes your site to the next level!
Anyways, I only can pay by money order, I live in Canada.. and I'm looking to pay around $10~15.
How long does it usually take to get all the process done.
BTW my site is hosted on geocities, any disadvantages?
Thx in advance.. I'm looking to purchase on quickly!

.com can go down to $8, so you shouldn't have trouble registering one.

What you need to do is to find a registrar that accepts money order, then simply go through the registration process (the specific details vary, especially since you are paying by money order).

Generally speaking, as soon as the registration is completed (maybe you do it on the website, or the registrar do it for you once they get the money order), you should have the domain live in 1 to 3 days. You simply need to forward the domain name to your geocities site. Depending on which registrar you choose, you may already have the forward as part of your registration service, or you may have to find somewhere else. (I suggest everydns.net, which is free and easy to use).

If you really want to take your site to the next level.. try raising your budget a little to say $20 maybe $25 and post a hosting request. There is bound to be a host or two willing to give you a domain AND some space for that, and it means you could move off geocities

Well, Matt, not necessarily so - this is a yearly price, not monthly fee.

Assuming the domain costs $8, and Elliot spends a total of $25, that leaves $18 per year for one year worth of hosting. While there are certainly hosts who can match that, I doubt the quality would be better than geocities.

I have no problem with Geocities, since I only use them as the skeleton of my website.
I use other host to host mp3's and images and stuff.. I use geocities as a background since geocities never goes down.
Currently getting 300+ hits per day and just wanted to purchase a domain name.. Thx anyway!
I'll be registering with registerfly.. thank you!

I agree that not all simple websites need a Fullfldged hosts . but what i understand from you wanting to aquire a domain name is so that your site gets a E-Identity ...so soon you would also think of having email address'es at yourname.com ... so you would be needing a Host then .
