do you know where the paths are for the frontend files, like to overwrite images in the control panel for certain themes?

are they accessable via ftp or do i need to use ssh or telnet or something?

/usr/local/cpanel/base/frontend/vertex/ would be a good place to start looking.

I would recommend doing this via ftp. SSH into your server and type

    locate vertex

Most probably those files are owned by root, and are configured so that only root can view them. I agree that SSH is probably your best option.
