I'm not sure. I think I remember reading it after the WWE (World Wide Entertainment) decided not to re-new thier keyword with AOL. I may be wrong about all this stuff though.

Why bother with AOL keywords. A few years ago, all a key word did was let you browse the AOL content version of a site for a bit, but since it appeared to be limited by space, after a while, you had to head out to the real website anyhow. So I didnt really see the point.

AOL users can browse your web site.
    Non-AOL users can as well

AOL users can browse your keyword (which is your website anyhow)
    Non-AOL users cant.

    AOL != internet

It really sucks. It is a way for access providers to filter different content. Now that AOL and Time Warner have merged, is it possible that they may filter out other sources of news forcing you to use their all in one solution? Want to read about censorship on the net becuase your ISP doesnt like what you may read:

    http://216.239.53.100/search?q=cache...cks-faq/part1/

Sorry, the original link is down, so a Google cache will have to do.

If you want keywrods head here:

    http://www.keywords.com/

Or these people (who went out of business):

    http://www.realnames.com/

I really like the way the net is set up now, the entire DNS system among other things, the fundamentals of the internet, but sadly it is moving away from that, black holers being sued, China firewalling the country, etc etc.

If screws with the mantra the net is based upon. Censorship, freedom of information, a self regulated body/medium of communication, etc etc. All the things that the utopia of the internet are supposed to provide.

A side note, simply based on the fact that I can not stand how AOL operates, whether it be censorship, poor service, etc etc, I refuse to send them money of any sort, and will try my hardest not to use AOL as much as I can. I usually try to get others to do the same.

At one point I was interested in the same thing (for another site I had). There is some information available at:
    http://mediaspace.aol.com/index.adp?fname=aoladops

No one at AOL's customer support will be able to help you. They will say you can't get one. If you work your way around for a bit they'll direct you to that page probably. The only person I was able to speak with that had any knowledge said that they weren't (at the time, this was 2-3 years ago) allowing people to purchase keywords but at one time they had sold 10 of them to people for 20k as a promotion.

Of course things could very well have changed by now
