    * Good web hosting with FULL UNIX SHELL and MULTIPLE DOMAINS?

I am looking for a new webhost.

Can anyone recommend a webhost for $15-25 per month (I can pay $30 if it is REALLY good)?

    My requirements are modest.

    Requirements:
    * A full unix shell, with standard unix utilities
    * The ability to have several domains with different content, without paying extra.
    * Perl, Python, and C scripting.
    * At least 100MB of space
    * Customer service that isn't clueless (I'm not going to ask stupid questions, I just don't want them to give me the runaround when the server is down)
    * Reliable uptime and bandwidth.

My current host (cwihosting.com) had a hard drive crash and the customer service is terrible, as people have indicated. (I signed up with them before reading this message board.)

I tried olm.net, which people have recommended, but was unsatisfed because the unix shell is severely restricted and doesn't even include such basic programs as diff. They refuse to install even the most basic text manipulation programs.

    TIA!

If in fact you are looking for a good host that meets your needs as stated you may want to consider dot5hosting ..I am quite sure they have all you are asking for and for a little less than your stated budget. They also have great support and are very prompt to reply to any questions. I have been with them since the first week of July and am quite satisified.

OLM and dot5 both use Ensim. Ensim is what is restrictive on the Unix shell end. This adds security. Sparrow, do you know if Dot5 hacks Ensim to open up the Unix shell limitation imposed by the software? That is what this user was asking for.

Cool. Since you get a quick reply from them, and since it would help this person out, I would ask them what hacks they did and what shell tools were added. This is what this person needs.

Wick Ness, it sounds like Dot5 is a good choice. Sign up and post back to let us know if they had everything you needed.

I figured I would save Sparrow the trouble of asking for more
information about what "hacks" I do to allow for additional UNIX
tools to be available to a site in Ensim.
Basically, if there is something you need that is not already
available, I have no problem giving you access to it.
Most of the time, this can be done by SymLinking to the command
and some time creating a hardlink is needed.
If there are tools that do not come on the server by default, such
as unzip, I will install them upon request.
There may however be specific things that either cannot be
installed, or that are too much trouble to install that would
require a small setup fee. Although, there has been nothing
requested so far of me that I have had to deny, or charge for.
As long as you can provide me with a list of exactly what you
would need, I will make every effort to install them for you.

And I would certainly hope that other hosts would be willing to
do similar setup for their customers.

Sparrow, thanks for taking the time to help Wick Ness with this.

Everyone, thank you for your replies.

DomineauX, I presume are dot5's admin and can speak for them. I have a few questions about your service before signing up.

What does ensim do anyway? How does it restrict the shell?

What sort of unix shell does dot5 come with? i.e. what sort of restrictions are in place? Will I have access to standard utilities, like textutils (wc, diff, etc.)

WRT to the unlimited subdomains, can I set them up to point to pages with different content?

Is there local mail delivery for pine? Can I have a pine email account AND other pop3 email accounts?

It looks like a very good service you provide! I look forward to potentially using it!

    Backups

BTW, does dot5 do backups of hosted accounts?

Yes, you assumed correctly, I am the Systems Admin for Dot5.

Ensim basically sets up a virtual file system shell for each site.
This causes the site to have a full file system structure that is
separate from the actual servers root level file system.
This is of course done for enhanced security.
Unfortunately, they only give access to a very limited list of utilities
via sbin and bin directories that most people are accustomed to
    having use of.
To resolve this, I create links to the utilities that are available in
the root level file system or copy some utilities into a sites virtual
file system so that they can be used from locations such as:
    /usr/bin, /usr/sbin, /bin, and ,/sbin
Pine would be one of the utilities I would need to copy into your
file system, but yes you can have access to it as well as "diff", "wc"
    and other text utils.
Wildcard subdomains are setup using Mod_Rewrite rules so that
any directory you create in your html content directory named in
the format of "sub.domain.com" will then be accessible from:
    http://sub.domain.com

What would you need this shell access for?
