Hi i i wanted to host a gaming server.
i had it running on windows xp long time ago but that was for nubs.
what Os should i use i heard some kind of windows 98 that is for high performance will be good.
Centos or ubuntu or any thing else.
trying to run Maplestory odims v55.
requiere vc++.
Hareware spec
p4 2.4
1gb ddr 3100
80gb hd ide
high speed network card
-dekstop pc-
had it running on this computer(xp04) run great for a month straight then i got bore and format it.

I tried to create counter server on Centos but it wasnt very good at all. One guy from counter team said that ubuntu is good for counter.

Realistically just about any flavor of Linux should work and I would suggest that you use one that you are familiar with. If you are not familiar with any of them then Ubuntu would likely be a good choice as it seems to be a little more user-friendly.

but can Maplestory be run on ubuntu i now you can play it but run a server on it.
Some one told me it can only be run on windows server.
And i was trying to get some info from Maplestory server hosting comp they use
Windows
Maple-Hosting provides Windows based servers.

Well why don't you talk to whoever "they" is ... the ones that are telling you CentOS is bad for running a MapleStory server.

Personally, I'd go linux. Reason being, less overhead, so it can run better on lower hardware.

The specific distro of Linux isnt going to matter very much.. But I agree with Bobby, I'd go linux over Windows as long as the server supports it.

Where are you getting your facts that most game hosts use windows? Seems to be that most I have seen use linux/freebsd for game hosting.

Most games are played on Windows, but most have a more stable server program for linux based operating systems. Not to mention linux is still more stable. Cant say anything on Server 2008, although I am liking my Data Center edition...

2008 datacenter is nice. particularly if you have the hardware to use hyper-v.
