Hello
Cdomain Pro is the best one.
I gave up writign and maintaining my own and bought this one.
It has saved a lot of time and is highly configurable.
http://www.cdomain.com/
When someone finds a free domain the data can be sent to our ordering system allowing us to handle as many of the country TLD's as we like.
Of course it only works for TLD's that have a whois server, and some like .tv do not.

BW whois... has a conf file in it it works great
http://www.onlinesupport.pe.ca/mmurphy/whois.html
Does ip and seems to pull all Domain Ext.
Hers the file, just remove the .zip[url]I got nothing/url]
For clarity's sake, don't use "<ip address of hostname>" use the ACTUAL 32-bit numeric IP address of the machine.

What's so good about Cdomain? There are free ones out there that do just as much. I was really looking for one that can integrate with something like OpenSRS so users can register their domains at the same time.

Hello
If you are using OpenSRS then you do not need a whois lookup because it is included in the client code.
But it only covers the TLD's they offer.
There is not really anything like Cdomain Pro.
Before I bought it I tried just about all the free ones I could find.
The big advantage of Cdomain is the ability to add new TLD's just by adding one line of parameters to the cfg file.
For example, adding the .info took 2 minutes work.
It can also integrate directly with your own ordering system which none of the others will do without considerable modification.
You also get the global search tool and domain wizard which can be integrated directly into your web pages.

I was going to purchase cdomain but the free version is hampering my decision.
It often doesn't produce any results. It just refreshes the page.

Actually
Cdomain predates that script by a couple of years at least.
Oddly enough he uses identical tags in his one and they are very similar.

Now I have taken a closer look at both scripts. It looks like cdomain has been around longer. Hotscripts added it to its database in 1999 whereas mattswhois was added in 2000. The strange thing is that there are no comments on cdomain' s script, but maybe nobody was interested because you have to pay for it.
I think it is the same script, because both use this text for the global domain search:
You can use this form to check the availability of domain names all over the world. Simply enter a single word below and a search will begin. Please be sure not to enter any punctuation characters or TLDs below. Please note that this search may take several minutes.
Click here to return to the normal Domain Name Lookup.
I was thinking of using mattswhois, but although cdomain should know about mattswhois I don' t think it is rightful.
I have found another free one: http://www.mrscripts.co.uk/ . It does not have as many TLDs, but I think you can easily implement new TLDs into the script.

Hi
Cdomain is (c) 1998 in my copy.
http://www.webwho.co.uk/
is a good script but I don't think it links to order systems easily.
I use it for checking domains myself:

I bought Cdomain PRO about 18 months ago and it really revolutionised our domain registration business.
Its very easy to add TLD's as they come along and you have all the different search wizards built in.

What seems hard with cdomainpro is linking the search results to an ordering system. How do you link more than 1 domain from the search results to the order form?

Hello
You can't
It has no shopping cart system.
However there is a version which does.
I looked at it but the way the fields were organised in the final form would have been incompatible with our payment system.
Cdomain Pro allows you to have more than one possible result returned and displayed on the page.
You can see this by going here:
http://www.nameroute.com/
Go half way down and try the global search tool.
The results page is made up from a header and footer plus the text at the top of the page (html templates)
The search results are hard coded and I had to recode the script to use a css class and add the buy now graphics.
I have been thinking about wrapping the cdomain into a seperate cart system but we get so few multiple orders I am not convinced its worth all the work.
