Hello!
I have some knowledge of web designing but I really donât know much about it. I wish to design and maintain a few sites. It seems every hosting company is good, but I am very much interested in two particular companies. Now, I am unable to decide which of these companies I should choose. Please help me to select one of these two:
ixwebhosting
hostgator

if you are just starting out, either would do, and since you are just starting out, any company would do really - you would probably save more going with an alternative because to get a good deal with the above companies, you have to go into a long term hosting deal.
choose wisely

Check out the shared hosting offer forum:
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=4
Many good hosts in there, also search the forum for reviews on a host before you pick them.

I'm agreeing with Clayton, take a look in the Shared Hosting Offers forum, loads of specials and great hosts for you to choose from.
Best of luck.

Do some search for domain names of both companies. They are popular and reputated in here. Compare and make your choice.
Good luck

out of the 2 you have chosen I'd have to go with hostgator, cheap prices and good service.

If my experience is any indication go with HostGator. 3 years and no problems whatsoever. I am knocking the wood. They have been great. Take my word for whatever it is worth, I have been through a number of bad hosting companies that replied to my questions in a split second before I signed for their services and never ever posted replies to any of my tickets after I paid them. I have come a long way to truly appreciate their services. You won't regret.

What attracted you to these two companies? Was it price, features, reputation, reviews ...? Just curious.

I use both myself. Ix had issues once and a while when I first started with them back in Jan 07 but I haven't noticed anything going wrong since they moved to a new datacenter last Spring. I started with HostGator 3 months ago and haven't had any downtime yet

So long as you're not just going with hostgator for the "unlimited" part (worst reason to pick a host IMO), then I'd go with hostgator out of those 2.

HostGator posts a telephone number for technical support. In my opinion, it is a mistake to get into a critical relationship, such as web hosting, where the other side does not even provide you with a telephone number. Some issues can be resolved in a few minutes by phone that take many back and forth emails. I assume that the companies with no addresses or phone numbers are operated by kids in apartments.
