I just saw the new AMD Phenom II on Newegg. What do you guys think of it? Just from reading up on the reviews, it looks like AMD has done a good job on the Quad Core this time. However, I haven't looked at the benchmarks yet and I doubt they came out yet so I'll just wait for awhile. The cheapest one is going for $190 so that's pretty cheap.

They've been out for about a month. I have the AMD Q9650 -- it's a pretty good processor. I wish I would have waited for the Phenom II to be released, but I ended up buying this PC.

That's rather strange that I didn't hear about it. I've been on Newegg almost everyday and I haven't seen it until today either. I suppose it's either Newegg just released it recently or I haven't looked carefully.

Newegg released it late.
The new Phenoms are meant to be really good, and i think they are fairly close to the i7.

I'd rather have a professional build the PC.

Many of us here are as professional as they come, I've built at least 1000 machines in the last 14 years....from small PCs to large servers. I know I am not along in the WHT crowd.

I'm decent when it comes to replacing PC parts, but I wouldn't trust myself to build a PC. I bought the PC from CyberPowerPC -- it's been great so far.

Really? I mean it's not too hard to build a computer. I think the hardest part might just be putting thermal paste on your CPU to make sure it sticks to your motherboard. I suppose if you don't want to get your hands dirty you could always buy one .
If the Phenom II can compare with the new i7, then Intel is going to be run out of business because AMD is way cheaper than the i7 and it's the second generation which shows customers its more stable. However, the only thing that makes me think the i7 is still superior is the Hyper Threading Technology. I don't think the Phenom II has anything similar to that. But I really doubt anyone would be able to utilize the full processing power of the i7 so the Phenom II should be fine. Plus, the best part is that the Phenom II seems compatible with the old AM2+ motherboards whereas the i7 has to get a new motherboard.

I'd be afraid I would break something.

Try it out sometime. Is very easy and for the amount of money you save yourself a lot.
The only thing I would consider hard to do is getting the annoying 1394/USB/AUDIO cable on the motherboard. However is always best to put this first so you have room.

Yeah, the only annoying part of putting together your own computer is dealing with all the small cables for the motherboard as some manuals are completely useless.

Yup hear ya there Orien. Can't believe how some mobo manufacturers royally screw up need to know details.
Needless to say I usually seem to get lucky there - albeit I'm an abit/asus/gigabyte person so I guess those tend to just stick to the script better.

The pheom contains the same quality as intel's Core2Quad. But, the only real difference is the power required and overclocking ability, which AMD has always had. For overclocking performance with Intel, you would need to buy the Extreme series of a chip.

AMD is an excellent company IMO, great proc for a great price. I go with AMD as often as I can.
