    Critical Success Factor

What have you found had the biggest positive effect on your hosting business. These options focus mainly on things related to the marketing of your business... perhaps feedback will generate another poll focusing on other factors.

Please restrict your answers to what you HAVE FOUND and not to what you think would help most in the future (you can mention those in this thread). i.e. what you really think has already made an actual difference.

    Word of mouth referrals.

The best planned marketting strategy couldn't possibly have as far reaching, effective and successful effect on results.

Since we added a "where did you find us" field to our order form we have seen a lot of people coming over from google. But we are also starting to get more word of mouth referrals which are always good

Hands down. Word of mouth rules all other methods of getting business. Treat your customers like gold, do your job properly, and every penny will come back to you dressed up like a shiny new dime.

So it's word-of-mouth by eight lengths so far.
    Not a big supprise really.
But it is suprising that none of the first three did better. For example, I would've expected that a top position on say Yahoo and/or Google would make a really big Could it be that only one has had top search engine positions or is it that it did not help much??

Thanks to all who've responded so far!

Nice poll, so everybody is voting for "word of mouth". It does mean you need to support your clients as much as possible.

Yes, that's true but very often clients recommend you most immediately after they have signed up.... i.e. before you've even had a chance to prove that you really will take good care of them. So it seems they need to be regularly 're-sold' on the service in order to keep up the enthusiasm.

Folks love forums. If they see a busy and vibrant .COMmunity [TM ], then it makes their decision easier. If they see a dead forum, they run!! Aussie Bob, host since 2001
