Hey guys,
I am currently on a Virtual Private Server and need to go dedicated ASAP.
I've been browsing for a new hosting company (dedicated) and need advice. The problem with my site is a very common problem:
It's not bandwidth
It's not disk space
The site uses too much resources. CPU usage is high.
On my VPS, I'm on a P4 3GHZ machine. I am only given one/tenth of the usage and it's not enough to support the site. The site is a news site, but it drives a lot of traffic, and all my pages are called out by SSI (server-side-include)
Therefore, I was recommended to move dedicated. There are a lot of prices that vary like crazy. The current host I am with wants to charge me $200 a month for just 100GB of bandwidth. I'd be looking over $300.
Here is what I need and I hope someone can suggest something:
- 200GB of bandwidth
- 50GB of space (not much)
- 24/7 management (Not where they take everything as a how to question)
- Fast hardware replacement guarantee
- 24/7 phone support (not call and talk with a 1st level guy who escalates the call. I want to talk directly with someone that knows)
You think I can find something around the $200 mark or less? If not I can go a bit higher.
Thanks in advance!

For that 24/7 support that takes you to someone that's actually going to work on your server you might be paying a bit more than you can afford. You should figure out exactly what you need in terms of management and make sure the company you like is willing to do what you expect them to do.
You could also try a higher end VPS from another company, since a P4 split to ten users is going to be pretty dreadful, and you're likely to get much better performance on a higher end VPS, but you will need to make sure Apache and MySQL are well optimized and perhaps even your news script could do with optimization or a cache implementation.

With the $200 budget check the current Limestonenetworks.com deal, Which is worth only 134.00USD.
Limestone Deal:
Quad Core Q9300
8GB DDR2 Ram
750GB HDD
2TB Bandwidth
Only $134.00 Per month
Choose a server management company based under $50 a month
And your sorted.

Some providers will offer managed services with their servers, or for a small fee in addition to the server.
For what you are using the server for, I would think you can find something within your budget rather easily.
A Quad Core will easily do the trick

Well by 24/7 support, I mean two things. If the server is down / slow, I'd like to call and have them reboot it right away. Not a 1st level guy opening a ticket forwarding it off and one hour later my server is rebooted / looked at.
If I have a question on why a certain script is not working on this server properly, get an answer soon and not the next day..
I get 10 million hits a month, I don't know if a high end VPS would do the trick?! If yes, do you know any hosting company that's reliable and have 24/7 support for a high end VPS?
Many thanks.

You might as well look for a company that provides remote reboot devices, so that you can hard-reboot any time and as much as you want, without calling pain in the a** support
Many providers that I know offer this without additional fee.

Your budget is plenty for a dual processor as well as covers your need for 200GB+ bandwidth.
Here is what I need and I hope someone can suggest something:

- 50GB of space (not much)
- 24/7 management (Not where they take everything as a how to question)

While you only need 50GB of space, I recommend you ask for RAID-1 at least. This gives you disk mirroring, which is essential for reliability. You're also looking for a managed server but make sure the provider in question can perform a chassis swap / server replacement on the spot (as opposed to having to go through RMA or vendor replacement which can take longer than 24h). As far as phone support goes, there aren't many providers that have their best sysadmins answer phone queue calls.
Overall your budget is in good shape so it's just a matter of cherry picking a provider.

Ok Thanks. Any ideas for a reliable hosting that meet my requirements?
The site doesn't have any videos or pictures. It's strictly a news drivven site with a large archive. Pure text really. All programmed in basic PHP. 10 million hits monthly...
I am just looking for a reliable host with 24/7 support. Either in Canada or the U.S.

I did some browsing, found peer1 and theplanet, but they're a bit pricy. I need to have one selected today. A reliable company, any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

You might get away with one time pay of someone to optimize it and
stay on the VPS? Are the pages cached?
Either way I think you can get a server at this price at Softlayer, a decent one though.

The only places you've looked at so far are Peer1 and ThePlanet? Take a look at the offers forum. There are companies such as Hivelocity, Liquidweb, Singlehop, etc that are worth a shot.
