I recently let a registration lapse (completely forgot to renew, and missed the emails, which I have since found). The registrar later auctioned off my domain name before I noticed, after around 30-60 days had elapsed.
It is a shame that I let a moderately valuable domain name drop, though I do not have any huge regrets - I was not using the domain, after all.
Just wondering - have others out there let their domains accidentally expire? Or is it just me? :p

I have my domains on auto-renewal. So, there is a very slim change I will lose my domains.
All the best,

Yes, it was a very sad day. That's all I'm going to say as it brings back bad memories, leaving it at that.

Mike,
No.....all important domains are registered 10 years in advance. All domains not in use for at least one year. All domains I want to keep are set to auto-renew and I keep a balance in my registrar account to renew from in case a cc# becomes invalid.

Back in '98 I had one of my employees responsible for making sure that all the domains got renewed. The ISP I own has responsibility for many customer domains. Unfortunately, he wasn't paying sufficient attention and I lost 69.com. Needless to say, he's no longer with the company. I have long since moved all the domains to my registrar and they all auto-renew.

Auto renew the important ones. Manually the rest. Have been fortunate to have never missed one.

Holy crap. That is one helluva domain to lose due to employee error. I hope he was tarred, feathered, then re-tarred, re-feathered, etc for a good week!

I've lost a few.
I keep everything on auto-renew. Even if they're domains I'm not sure I'm gonna keep.
But not every registrar offered auto-renewal. So, given my fights with procrastination, I've lost a few.
But I haven't lost any since I got DomainPunch (http://www.domainpunch.com/products/domainpunch/).

Very cool, Dennis. I've been looking for something like that for quite a while. Thank you!

I try to be....I'm using dynadot a lot recently and they are a great registrar. I've also begun using pairnic because they have a total domain lock feature which requires a fax/photo id to get it unlocked for any updates, this is great for important domains.
Also to note namecheap, internet.bs and moniker.

I don't use many domains, and the ones I have are not of much intrinsic value, but I still think of myself as lucky to have never lost any.
I came to realize that my procrastination habit might cause me harm some day (Dennis' experience above is yet another warning), so I've decided to renew all my domains at the start of each year.

I lost a domain once with GoDaddy because I was without internet access. This is back when they really didn't give you a grace period and everything went right into redemption period. I wasn't going to pay that fee and ever since then (many years ago) the domain has always been owned by someone else, was a good domain too!
